I think in the Auburn game it might be more Russell than Dak, but I think Week 1, 3, and 4 we should get a healthy dose of Prescott. Get into the bye week, see how he's doing within the offense, and use the bye week to integrate him more into the offense if he's doing well. The end of the schedule may be brutal, but I like what we can do in the beginning of the year with the QB situation and just from an overall momentum perspective.

I really want to see the added wrinkle with him as a runner but it will be taking a big risk.

Dan won't change what he does unless one or the other goes down. Even then, I don't think he will quit running it with them, just do it less.

When has MSU(or mostteams) nothad QB injury problems. Between Russell and Relf's injuries, we almost didn't make it to 6-6. This is an 8-4 record and a ChickFilA, Gator orbowl, not to be goofed up.

The new starters on the O-Line also get time to get some experience before we hit the big boys. We use these early games to work out the kinks and build some continuity.

Less QB running means less offensive productivity.

I do not disagree with you but it seems like more of a risk with him as the back backup. </p>

I think at this point, Dan will take Russell's experience over Prescott's running ability, BUT Russell is not going to be successful if we cannot protect the passer 500% better than last year.

If we can pass block, this would be the year to tilt the scales to 50-50 or 40-60 run/pass. If we can find someone to actually coach WR's we should have a good group. Russell will be a 4th year, RS Junior, and our options at tailback are not as strong at inside running as they have been in the past. I would like to see an "extended running game" type passing spread this year a la Houston. Not sure if Russell has the release for that though.

We will always be a run first team. Pass blocking is easier that run blocking in general, so a better offensive line will lead to us running the ball more.

to start full-time. We will always be run-first under Mullen. And he wants a mobile QB.<div>
</div><div>As Tenure said- look for a 70/30 split probably to start the season, with Dak slowly getting more playing time as the season goes on.</div>

Relf is deadly with time but he holds the ball too long and has very little pocket presence. So that caused us huge problems at QB and forced us to go to Russell who handles the pocket better but doesn't run as well which our offense had been more geared toward. So we were just a little off kilter all year. I think Dan will make adjustments with next year's team that will work out better. Plus we get some talent off redshirt that will really help us. If we keep Banks and Cox it could be an exceptional year.

You will never hear a coach or offensive lineman say this. It is much easier for a lineman to attack rather than become stationary and be attacked. Footwork plays a major part in pass blocking and younger lineman will typically suck.

Pass blocking takes a long time to teach and learn. Run blocking is just physical. That's why there are a lot of small school tackles from smaller, pass-happy college teams being brought up in the NFL these days. They don't have to go though the teaching the run blocking guys do.

I really can't see Dan playing one guy more than 20% if we can pass block. When Dan had Leake and Tebow, Tebow was a red-zone or infrequent short yardage only option. Prescott is going to be a good one, but he's no Tebow. Several times this year we switched out a hot Russell for a cold Relf, and it did not work out well for us.

Prescott is also going though his own accuracy problems. See Paul's biscuit's today for evidence of that. He will probably work though it, but not in this one year.

Now you may be right that Dan is always going to have a run-first offense, but he's also always said he was going to work with the personnel he has. This coming year he has an offensive team that should perform better in passing situations than running.

QB: Veteran Passer, RS Frosh Runner
RB: Veteran outside runner (though we keep trying that square peg / round hole), RS Soph remains to be seen could be the inside guy we need, RS Frosh outside runner
WR: Possibly most talented MSU receiver corp ever on the field, and many of them are Seniors. They need coaching BAD.
TE: Very good pass oriented TE's

The only question is the OL. If they can pass block, we should pass a lot more this year. If not, we should just play Prescott and be done with it.

First, people thought Russell was going to play as a true Freshman- but we went with Lee/Relf<div>Then he was going to be the obvious starter going into 2010- never happened</div><div>Now, this season, when it would have been easy to give the job to Russell (and I agreed with as you well know)- he still brings Relf back and to start to end the season.</div><div>
</div><div>We are in agreement that the offense will have to be changed some in order for Russell to be the QB- I'm just not convinced Mullen will do that for Russell- at this point. This Spring should answer a few questions, but I dont think it will settle it. Prescott has a much higher ceiling than Relf throwing the football and should come along nicely this Spring.</div><div>
</div><div>I just dont see us changing the offense- and that works to Prescott's advantage</div>

The proof is in the pudding, Mullen prefers a mobile QB.....whether it's Relf, Prescott, or even mini Favre, he always likes to have a runner in the game in key situations.
