Chytl will get better but it’s a no brainer to take Timo over him
Lol. Chytil is developing into a 30/30 center at age 23. He is so good. Needs to be locked up long term. Gonna have to move goodrow to lock up him and kandre

Game was electric last night. I went to the game with low expectations as it was a western canada team who we have no bad blood with. Walked out as it probably being the most entertaining game at the garden since game 7 vs the pens

Putting aside the OT game winner, Laf was very visible last night.

If you could combine Trochek’s face off skills with Chytil’s 5v5 play, you’d really have something cooking.
If Flip had Trochek level face off skills, I agree with you, he’d be a point a game guy similar to Mika

If chytil simply got power play time and replaced trocheck hed be ppg this season. His 5 on 5 production is near the tops in the league

Amazing how Laf helps drive the kid line.
If there’s one thing GG has to have learned, it’s that line must not be broken up no matter how poorly the top two lines are playing.
Once again, the only reason they don’t get significant more minutes and Chytil doesn’t get PP time is he loses 7 out 10 face offs and he’s about 1 in 10 against the good face off men in the league
Only Gallant can watch a guy play as well as Chytil has been playing and:

-still not put him on PP1 instead of Trochek (Mika can take the face offs)

-give Trochek over almost two minutes more ice time at even strength.

It also shows how f**king hypocritical Gallant is about what he wants from players as well. Chytil is actually better on defense than Trochek right now, and doesn’t take as many stupid penalties.

He loses basically every O zone face off Kyk, especially important on PP to at least stalemate, but he gets beat clean.
However, i agree with ^^^Krup
If you let Mika take faceoffs the PP would be better.
I’m convinced Flip would also be a tremendous penalty killer, but he absolutely couldn’t take draws

Keep it in perspective, zap.

For every 10 face offs Trochek will win 5 1/2, and Mika will win 1 less and Chytil almost 2 less.

It’s important in some situations, but WAY overrated as a justification to put someone good at face offs but worse at the rest of hockey out on the ice too much.

Exactly, just have mika take the pp faceoffs. Hes so much more talented than trocheck to sit in the slot and play the bumper position on pp

This is why Gallant was run out of town twice before - he's an old school coach who makes decisions based upon his gut (as opposed to his eyes, and certainly as opposed to analytics).

Benching Kakko for the last game against Tampa was a mind boggling move, so much so, it would have had to have a green light from Drury.
You may think GM’s let coaches coach and do as they please with personnel decisions, but I can assure you they are involved.

What worse with Gallant is that his “gut” decisions have no consistency and are often contradictory.

For example, he obviously values face offs which means he values gaining possession. Shouldn’t he also value keeping possession? He has no use for Jones who can get the puck out of the defensive zone while Harpur is inept at it, and plays unskilled forwards who have to dump the puck in the offensive zone over Gauthier who is good at entering the offensive zone while maintaining possession.

He talks about defensive responsibility from the forwards, then benched Kakko in game 6 against TB when he had played well and been on the ice for zero TB goals in the first five games.

Here’s a very underrated part of Gallant’s idiocy that any sports fan can understand.

If a baseball manager let the away team bat last because he wasn’t into that home field advantage stuff the fans would understandably go crazy.

Well, Gallant refuses to match lines. So, for the 41 away games each year each Ranger line has to face the home team players that coach thinks match up best with them, but in the other 41 home games the Rangers just don’t use that advantage because he doesn’t think it is important.

I expect Bratt to be more expensive as he has a longer track record then Cozens, and is (I believe) a year or two closer to free agency. I think Bratt's contract starts with an 8...something like 8 years and $68mm (8.5mm per year).

I like Bratt, but think he is probably the 4th or 5th most valuable guy on the team after Hughes, Hischier, and Hamilton....and maybe a guy like Siegenthaler or Marino or Vanecek. By the time Nemec and Luke Hughes hit there stride, he might be the 6th or 7th most valuable guy.

I like to see him take a $7.5M per year contract, but yeah, I think a lot of Devils fans are like you when it comes to Bratt, a bit weary of giving him more than Jack when in two years down the road he might not even be the Top 5 player on the team, but that also speaks to the talent level we have and have coming in down the road. Not a bad place to be.

Some talking heads don't think the Devils can sign Timo and Bratt long term, if they made the trade.

I said this after Bratt signed a short-term deal last summer, I think he will end up being traded, sadly. News reports recently have said Bratt extension talks are off to a slow start.

I think Bratt is miffed the NJD were willing to pay Johnny G. for his time in Calgary, but not pony up for him. Don't be surprised, if he is traded this year.

Oh I find it hilarious that Columbus is once again proving, those that win FA Signing Day, lose when the games start.

Be surprised. Maybe in the off season. I don’t know if you noticed, the devils are going to the playoffs. They have 2 free agent defense they aren’t trading either.

Time will tell. I think Severson might be traded.
Definitely not trading Severson this season...that would make no sense. View him as a rental.

With Hughes and Nemec likely on the roster next year, Severson and Graves are (most likely) both gone. Along with Bernier, Wood (I suspect), Johnsson, and maybe Tatar and Blackwood, the Devils will free up some cap space that should allow them to keep Bratt and Meier (if they go in that direction).

So Nemec/Hughes replace Severson and Graves at a big cap savings.
Johnsson and Bernier are dead cap space and can leave without needing replacements.
Wood and Tatar probably get replaced by a combo of Holtz, Boqvist, Foote, and Clarke. All the replacements are on inexpensive deals.

The problem probably starts when you need to pay Mercer, Nemec and Hughes. That's where some of the existing core probably needs to get shipped out.

Defense has a longer learning curve for young players at the NHL than forward. I would be surprised if the Devils simply replace two veterans with young guys new to the league next year. I could see them retaining, or picking up, a veteran you aren’t considering for protection.

They have young defensemen who can pick up the slack, even if no veteran defenseman is traded for.

We are not going to resign Severson to an extension, so trading a right shot D-man makes a lot of sense long term. As the assets coming back would be nice.

I don't know what Fitz is thinking but I wouldn't discount it. Remember one of the reasons it got so bad was losing players for nothing, like Parise and Clarkson. At this stage of development the Devils should be buyer's and seller's.

You need 7-8 defensemen for a long playoff run, and I would be surprised if the Devils sold at the deadline.

While just like the Rangers last year, realistically this is a year the Devils should mainly hope to win a round or two and gain experience, teams don’t pass up a chance to go for it when they have as good a regular season as the Devils have.

The Rangers did the same thing last year when they kept Strome and played Copp on the wing even though Strome’s contract was running out and they weren’t keeping him.

I think Tom Fitzgerald will see it your way. I was writing what I hope will happen. Very astute point about young defensemen. I think the NJD will look to get a veteran defenseman or 2 at the deadline.

Luke Schenn has been talked about recently. Realistically I don't see this as a Cup year. So I am looking long term when I forecast this. I think the return would be nice.

As a Ranger fan, I was looking at last year what I suppose is the same way most Devils fans would be looking at this year. I was happy they made the playoffs and was hoping they could win at least a round, but I thought it was too early in the rebuild to be real contenders and I didn’t want them to impact the rebuild to “go for it”.

The thing is, ownership makes a lot of money from playoff games so they want as many as possible, and the Rangers kept Strome and overpaid for Copp.

I expect that after such a long playoff drought Devils ownership will not worry about continuing to build assets for future years and instead do what they can to maximize this year’s run.

As a Devils fan (who was a Rangers guy before they came to NJ) I am thrilled with the progress and the future.

But as a hockey fan it’s good for the game when the Rangers are doing very well too.

I think Timo Meier would be a great fit for the team both because of how he plays but also because of his age and compatibility with the Devil's window to be competitive. I can see Fitzgerald trading for a rental type player if there is a need, but not giving up anything of real value for it. Meier, however, can be part of your long-term solution, so giving up something of value makes sense.

I think the Devils core is established...so they shouldn't do anything that disrupts that core to win now. But fortunately they don't have to do so to go for it this season, so i think you can have it both ways. Severson is a guy that if we are bad, we could probably flip for a 2nd or 3rd rounder at the deadline...but it doesn't make sense to put a hole in your roster for a draft pick...particularly when the organization is still pretty deep with young talent.

I think the Devils either add a Meier as a long-term piece (and pay a real price (pick, prospect, player) or pay a 2nd or 3rd rounder for a rental that adds some scoring and toughness.

Devils #2 in the prospect pool rankings by Scott Wheeler:

Led by four top D prospects (including two of the sport’s very best, and including two of each handedness), a top forward prospect, and strong depth in net, on the wing, and on defense, the Devils’ pool is a high-end centre prospect shy of having a little of everything.

Their pool, which already ranked in the top five last year, is improved year-over-year after an eight-pick 2022 draft, which included the No. 2 selection.

But with all three of their top prospects nearing graduation, five 22-year-olds on the list, and already no third rounder (with the potential to move more) in the 2023 draft, their rare place as a top team with a top prospect pool likely won’t last forever. It’s a good place to be for now, though!

And the one thing the Devils really need for quite a while is centers.

Rangers got a nice stable of young forwards with the Kid Line and Othmann and Beard in the pipeline. Adam Sykora is a great prospect too.

You have it mostly right, but Krav should be on with Panarin and Zibanejad. Vesey just can’t convert enough of the chances he gets on that line. Vesey to the right of Trochek and Kreider.

Is Jack Hughes hurt ? Apparently he has missed all or part of last 2 practices with an “ upper body injury”.
I was at last game vs Canucks and he looked fine as he was skating full force in the OT. He did absorb a check in the game I recall
Hope nothing serious !

He was slashed in the hand by a Vancouver player. Not sure if it’s what kept him out of practice.
His brother took a puck in the face last night.
He’s ok, but he’ll be sore.

The Rangers need to lock up Miller long term and bridge Chytil, contrary to what everyone has been saying.

The difference between what they could lock up Chytil for now (probably 6.5-7) and what he would get in a few years after a bridge is not that great.

Miller, on the other hand, could hopefully be locked up long term for 5-6 million. He is quietly turning into one of the better offensive defenseman in the league. He is tied for 14th in even strength scoring with 23 points. For example Darnell Nurse (9.25 million) has 23, Hughes (7.875) has 24 and Makar (9) has 25.

If the Rangers don’t lock up Miller now for 5-6 they may be paying him 8-10 million in a few years or he may walk to a team that pays him that much to run their first power play unit.

Not sure I agree with the need for centers. In a 3 year stretch the Devils got 2 first overall picks in Hischer and Hughes. I mean everyone wants for depth down the middle, but I don't think you're hurting at center. And, you guys locked up Hughes early; had they waited till THIS year I'd bet that price goes up.

Build around what's there, and you guys should be in great shape. The fact that a large part of the prospect depth are d-men is huge.
