OT: anyone have friends or family in western North Carolina that we can be praying for?

Every disaster has the area that seems to be forgotten, similar to how the Land Mass was in Katrina. That flooding is bad there, Biltmore underwater, and nobody seems to be talking about it.
Cousins in Candler, just outside Asheville. They’re safe. No water or electricity expected for at least a week, but they’re safe and their son is bringing them supplies.
It wiped out the Augusta area for power. They have estimated by Saturday midnight. We evacuated to Columbia. Wife is going to run supplies to augusta tomorrow morning.
Would imagine cochise is in a similar predicament since he's in same area as we are.

Eastbound I-40 collapsed at the Pigeon River. It's expected to closed until September 2025.
Western Carolina is such a beautiful part of the country.
While obviously not important in the grand scheme.. I know somebody on the SC side of Augusta. He says if a tree is still standing on Augusta National he’ll be surprised.
Been following some guys flying copters in and out of Asheville. They’re flying in supplies and getting people out who need medical attention. All the towns and communities up and down the rivers are all isolated with no communication. There’s no telling how many people might be dead. Just total devastation.
Yes. Two classmates from Copiah Academy class of '88 and their families. One I've heard from and he is ok. The other hasn't been heard from. Both live in Ashville area.
Yeah you can pray for me my in laws are in from western NC with their dogs that bark NON STOP and have no plans to leave anytime soon.

My brother lives there (Sylva) and narrowly avoided disaster. Water was 10" deep in the crawlspace under his house but did not reach the floor. He has power and water. Communication is a major problem though.
People two doors down weren't so lucky and had 3 feet of water in their living space.
It's a disaster for sure. I pity the Asheville folks.

I lived in Sylva from 2010-2018 met my wife living there. Then we were north of Boone until July when we moved the Upstate of SC right across the border. Stuck it out Friday night. Been in a hotel since Saturday. My job is closed until at least Thursday. My kids school is closed this entire week. My wife is currently working in a hotel room with our 80lbs dog, my 4 year old son, my 3 year old son, and me; how she can concentrate baffles me. Having said all of that, we were very lucky we had no damage to our house or property. Lots of our friends have lost everything. We were able to get out. We know multiple people and families that have had to be flown out by helicopter.

Blitz, Richmond Co shut water off Sunday, Columbia Co water still on. Airport recorded winds at 85 mph. Multiple deaths reported some from trees coming thru roofs Friday AM. Tree coming off my roof this morning. Went thru a hurricane on NC coast years ago and this is much worse than that. Ga Power says this is worst storm in their history in Ga. Not sure where you live but every street in our neighborhood and Hereford Farm Road blocked by downed trees Friday.
We are behind Riverwood publix. I went out first daylight Friday and started helping clear downed trees on our side of Riverwood so that we could get in and out. Went to the store, made sure nothing was going on there. Went the other way into Riverwood and cleared trees that way. Bigger machines showed up to clear a whole bunch and I went down Washington toward 20. Saw all the down powerlines. Went home and told wife she needed to pack and get the kids out.
It took 2 hours for her to get to 20 at that point, she was headed to alabama, turned around and came home. Saturday morning, I got up got packed, figured out that we could hit columbia easily. My car barely made Lexington for gas. Stations backed up, or non functional all the way to Lexington. First hotel we hit in Columbia was powerless. We toward Camden.
Wife going back with supplies this morning for friends, hopefully will be able to return easy enough. Doesn't look good though. People have lost their ever loving minds about lines and how traffic should flow.
They've told us Saturday for a return to power, but now I am hearing certain places getting lit up, tells me, we may have store lights tomorrow.
No need to limit your prayers to friends and family…

I’d venture a guess that little talk about it is due to the fact that there is very little communications available with that area due to the amount of damage
I think it is more a testament to how F’d up the consumers of media are. They cover initial hurricanes because people watch them. It’s like a disaster movie. Rain is boring. Yeah there is flooding, but there isn’t immediate visuals of houses being torn to shreds. If people watched, there would be more coverage. It’s the same reason people forgot about the land mass. New Orleans looked like some made up movie.
I have a CG buddy that lives in Franklin, NC. He reports no electricity, no way in or out of his place, roads either covered with debris or washed out. He has a generator providing minimal power for Starlink and fridge but he and wife are OK. he said he has a few more days of food but after that he'll head to the creek and fish for food.
Me and the wife took the grandbaby up to Steacoah (between Bryson City and Fontana) this past August, had a great time. Hope all those folks up there have survived. I hope the Nantahala Outdoor Center didn't get wiped out, we had a blast zip lining up there.

So this may be a stupid question, but did all these people know what was coming?
Are these places identified as flood zones and do the people that own those buildings basically know it's only a matter of time, like somebody only 12ft above sea level on the gulf or east coast knows (or should know) it's only a matter of time, even if it may be several decades, before they get flooded? Or do they have no clue that they have flood risk?
And even if they aren't aware before the hurricane is coming, once the rain is predicted, can they more or less predict where is going to get the flooding like in coastal areas so you can relocate ahead of time? Or do they just know they'll be flooding because of the rain but not know necessarily what areas will be flooded because there is a lot of elevation change and which low areas get a lot of runoff is not entirely predictable?

Mountains are definitely more unpredictable.
Biltmore Village is what I saw was underwater. Have not seen anything about Biltmore being underwater.

Well normally even when hurricanes affect the region it isn't like this. It was a unique combination of a good amount of rain fall earlier in the week combined with a fast moving storm that dumped even more rain and strong winds. Biltmore Village always floods with a decent rain. Same for the River Arts District. Obviously this is significantly worse than normal. But, it wasn't expected to be as severe as it is. For instance a lot of schools didn't announce closings until Thursday night or even Friday morning. We don't typically get that much rain combined with wind. I've lived in the region for nearly 15 years and while we typically get significant weather it isn't normally like this. Some of the local meteorologists have said this was a once like a 500 year storm for the area.
Yep that danged cold front is what did it, saturated the area. AND.....it didn't weaken Helene like it was supposed to. It was supposedly bringing in some dry air but apparently didn't happen the way they thought it would. It (Helene) also went east of the anticipated track.
Luckily I gassed the truck up the day before and made it out of town Monday after I got the tree removed from my roof. Landscape in the area forever changed. Lucky only 1 tree. Oak tree in neighbors yard fell away from their house but across my fence and fire pit area. Took 3 more trees in the backyard down with it and took the fence at rear of property. Green space behind the house which had several large trees in it is leveled, looks like a tornado came through. In Farmington and have at least 2 houses in the neighborhood totaled with multiple trees thru them. Luckily nobody hurt. Take care
Some of the videos starting to come to light with people getting access to the internet are horrifying. There’s no telling how many people are dead.
A lot of lives could have been saved had the US government lifted a finger to help. Instead, they chose to stop people and organizations from helping. FEMA confiscating donations and supplies because they are not provided by “preferred vendors “, shutting down landfills so debris can’t be removed , threatening private helicopter pilots with arrest, stopping private drone searches , stealing pallets of chainsaws so they can’t be provided to citizens, etc….. This is not incompetence. This is evil. But, we have billions for Ukraine, 170+ million for Lebanon, 640+ million the 17ing illegals and nothing for tax paying Americans.
This is what is so 17ed up yet we barely hear anything about it. Hell, I’m not sure I’ve even seen it mentioned here that much if at all. But it’s all fine! Joy and whatever.
Is there actual evidence of FEMA doing that? I see all these people talking about it but no actual evidence. I’m just kinda skeptical when it’s just something thrown out there on social media.
Not saying FEMA is infallible because they certainly aren’t.
I have seen video of some fire chiefs or emergency management people getting on their high horse with all this.
So the firsthand accounts being reported are lies? Elon Musk was lying when he said they (FEMA) stopped his team from distributing starlinks and delivering supplies with his helicopter? Tim Kennedy is lying when he said FEMA stopped his team from doing search and rescue? The multiple helicopter pilots that, on TV, are saying FEMA has stopped them from continuing their rescue flights and threatened them with arrest?
I find it interesting that you choose to believe this gov’t over private citizens. Also, that you believe these people who are in desperate need of help lie when they say how FEMA has done nothing but create bigger problems.
