Is Chitch's still around? Between all the flooding and that ginormous apartment fire, that neighborhood has seen better days.
Yup!! Ovens were not damaged by flood waters!! Whenever I send somebody there they always say jeez what's with the neighborhood

Planning a trip back to NJ to show my boys around where I grew up in Bergen County (roots through my dad in Hudson County, too.)
We visit the Ocean City area about every year and know the good food places around there. Would be grateful for suggestions from this board for favorite pizza and hero places in Bergen or Hudson.

have this debate and disagreement with my wife often....sure there are many different styles of pizza but is any one better than another ? A high rating from Portnoy means it’s better than others ? Not to me.

It’s very rare for me to have a slice or a pie that i didnt truly like. thin crust, deep dish, white, greek, grandma, and even Domino’s, Costco or frozen Elio’s.

To me, pizza is almost universally delicious. I cant say the same about wings, burgers, or most other things. But it’s impossible to screw up pizza.

My personal favorite is the chicken-bacon-ranch pie at any of the Paneteri’s locations close to me but that’s just me. Plain pies are great too. it’s all tasty.

I live about a minute away from delucia’s. Good pizza, liked it a lot more when I first moved here but have since become tired of it. It’s a unique slice, very crunchy and well-done on top. Ended up switching over to Toscanas in Bridgewater for a more traditional slice. Dominic’s in the circle is good too, classic jersey place run by straight goombahs.

If you’re in Raritan check out Espo’s and Uncle Vinnies. Those are two excellent spots, places are filled with pure characters too.
Agree with the extra crunchy note.
Kids love the buffalo chicken pie at DeLucia's but I follow the same plan for my family and myself except I'm in Bridgewater closer to Toscana's. If it's not a weekend, I might lean toward DeLucia's because you can actually get a pie within a half hour.

Heard Eapo’s has gone down hill since they sold. Was a great old style place. I love the Bridgewater area as they have several different styles of pizza. We just had Delucias a couple of weeks ago. But you also have Alfonso’s in Somerville Chimney stock in BRidgewater and Lombardi’s I. Martinsville. I really like Lombardi’s as it is true Neopalitan pizza and the owner goes to Naples every few years to get new ideas. Delucia’s Calzones are also awesome

I love Alfonsos, drive 15 minutes from belle mead as my go to pizza joint....sausage pie is to die for
Bridgewater area is great for being close to a bunch of different really good pizzerias and different pizza styles.

We typically hit Dominick's or Toscana's for quick slices and pies too. Lombardi Pizza Co in Martinsville has excellent Neapolitan. AMA Pizza in Hillsborough also has good Neapolitan but I prefer Lombardi. Chimney Rock is unique and we get that sometimes too (reheats well in the toaster). Not a huge fan of Alfonso's; not bad but prefer the others. Panatieri's also has good pizza and I recently tried Mangia Bella in Whitehouse on 22 and liked that too.

I live in Somerset County and believe it or not I have never been there. Need to go now. I love the people driving by, "You're gonna love it!" "It's the best Portnoy!"

Raritan High Fighting Deluccia's!
It’s all Basilone in Raritan, and rightly so.

after viewing several of the barstool guys pizza's shows, it seems he greatly prefers the pie being a bit well done, where we have some black spots on the top, and charred a bit on the bottom....
When he looks at a pie before eating, I think this
prejudices him a bit, and the score is going to be influenced some right off the bat

on one of the shows it was mentioned that the establishment knew he was coming and purposely cooked the pie more well done

unlike a steak, which the preparation debate there could go on forever, I never thought a pie had to be on the well done side

that said, I have gotten undercooked pies, where the sauce seems not cooked all the way, and I don't like that...any pie cooked enough to have sauce done enough is fine by me

I usually don't go some place on a Friday or Saturday night and get a pie, possibly the place might be rushing the pies out a bit

Have you been to Pepe’s lately? Not as good as they were. I still like them but not the same since their expansion. They are probably 4th or 5th in New Haven now. Sally’s & Modern much better. Even Bar and Zuppardi’s. I get to New Haven often since I go to a lot of college hockey games in the area. That being said, I was born and raised in NJ but New Haven pizza is tops.

IMO, Sally's the much better clam pie, but the vodka sauce and meatball from Pepe's was the best one I had overall.

New Haven is an awesome day trip, well worth it for any foodie, it was like 1.5hr from North Jersey without traffic.

Apperently they sold out of pizza tonight and had to close early.

Is it really a big deal if this Barstool guy says so?
Some people must think so. Personally I think Portnoy is a douche and the things he is looking for in great pizza are trash. But sounds like business is booming for a local joint, good for them.

In the parking lot of Papa's waiting for my mustard pie while reading this thread. It's crazy just down the road from here is another great pizza spot in De Lorenzo's. Cost of living, taxes, and other things are out of control in NJ but at least we have the best pizza I guess. 🤣🤣

One bad thing about living in Cali is that the pizza sucks. Blaze Pizza anyone?

I really miss NJ pizza and I am jealous of you all.

Same here in WA. Luckily found 2 decent places. The owner of one is Sicilian and the owner of the other is from NJ.
Same here in Arizona. I and all of my family members have lived in several states and agree that NJ in general has the best pizza by far... The last great pizza I had was about 6 years ago when I was back in NJ for a friend's funeral. (And it was the first really great pizza I'd had in years..) Not sure what pizzeria it was, but we were in the Ramsey-Mahwah area.

The biggest pizza related culture shock was when I moved from northern NJ to a little town in Ohio as a teenager in the early 80's. We went to our local small town pizzeria for the first time and ordered a large pizza.. When it came out, we found out that the cheese that they used on their pizzas was 100% yellow American cheese, and the crust could've passed for cardboard. "Toto, I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore."

Outside NJ? That's a lie.

I remember a post from some who was down in Phoenix for RUs 1st Schiano bowl. Said every few blocks the was a Mexican place that would be Top 10 in NJ. He added "do not eat the pizza". Well, as my brother found out in Dallas, good pizza can be found, but you really have to look for it. New Jersey for pizza is like Mexican for Arizona, every town has a place that would be "Top 10" in Arizona. And then you narrow it down to the true gems.

Yep, Mexican food in NJ is as bad as pizza in every state outside the tri-state, in my experience.

Interesting that you judge the doneness by the sauce. Isn't that already cooked ahead of time and just gets warmed during the bake? For me it's definitely the dough. Not that I necessarily need it well done but undercooked dough is a major no-no.

It varies by shop and sauce type, but sauce doesn't have to be cooked - can be mixed up cold. Just warmed during the bake.

Agree 100 on the crust - thick, mushy crust is one of the main factors that makes pizza in the rest of the country so bad.

what said is that the younger generation embraces food at wawa, subway, dominos, papa johns as being real examples of sandwiches and pizza.

Sure, that's why half of every social media app is food. Also why crappy chain restaurants have been struggling since millennials took over from you tasteless boomers.

Do you ever know wtf you're talking about?

Bac is correct here on pizza. All my younger neighbors order from the chains. So weird when we have great local places by me.

Tasteless boomers created or preserved all the great pizza places people are raving about on this thread.

Where in Arizona?

While not on par with NJ/NY Pizza, Famous Beer and Pizza in Sedona, AZ is passable as decent. There is also a place in West Sedona called Gerardo's that is pretty good. Ohio may be a pizza waste land. When we lived in Cincinnati, we latched onto Papa Johns, mainly because we drowned our sorrows in the garlic dipping sauce.
