Texas State and Arkansas State were locked up at 24 late in the 4th quarter on Saturday. That's when Tx St uncorked a 63 yard run down to the Ark St 3 with 1:03 left in the game. Ark St had 2 timeouts. So, Tx St could have run a few plays to force them to use their timeouts and kicked a FG with a few ticks left on the clock. They, instead, scored a TD on the very next play BUT missed the PAT. With 53 seconds on the clock and 2 timeouts, Ark St drove the field for a tying TD and kicked the game-winning PAT. 31-30 Ark St.

As a Gamecock fan, I'm well acquainted with heartbreak and that's some next level heartbreak.

I'm sure the Tx St coach would like a do-over, but I can't say it was an egregiously bad coaching decision not to just go for the FG and leave them with 10 seconds or so on the clock.

I didn't see the game but if Tx St scored on a run in the middle from the 3, they really couldn't have done much more to push Ark St to use timeouts. If they threw for a td, that was dumb coaching.

I didn't see the postgame, but I suppose the Tx St coach indicated if he had to do over again, he would have run a few plays just to set up a go-ahead FG with only about 10 seconds left.

Yeah, but I hate to put the game on the shoulders of a kicker if I have a chance to score a TD. The fact that he missed the PAT validates my thinking.

They lost that game because their defense let the other team drive the length of the field in 53 seconds.

That would be my call as well, but I would be nervous as heck with nearly a minute and 2 TOs for the opposing team. If you put it on the kicker and he misses the FG and you lose in OT, then you look like a moron for not trying to score a TD.

There are few exceptions where a fg should be the choice over a TD or going for it on 4th. FG’s more of than not are a loser move

The fact the kicker missed the PAT validates that coaching decision in my mind.

That's the Notre Dame - Texas A&M game all over again.
