Wasn't bad early this morning, but it's getting hazy in Bergen again.

Edvard Munch's "The Scream" was inspired by skies hazed-up by Krakatoa.

“One evening I was walking out on a hilly path near Kristiania—with two comrades—The sun was going down—It was like a flaming sword of blood slicing through the concave of heaven. The sky was like blood—sliced with strips of fire—I felt a great scream,”

Even NY skies were affected:

“Soon after 5 o’clock the western horizon suddenly flamed into a brilliant scarlet, which crimsoned sky and clouds. People in the streets were startled at the unwonted sight…The clouds gradually deepened to a bloody red hue, and a sanguinary flush was on the sea…” New York Times, November 28, 1883, p. 2.

Hawaii’s erupting Mauna Loa volcano

"Although the Krakatoa eruption was one of the largest eruptions of the past 200 years, it is not exceptional in comparison to other eruptions from the geological record. In terms of eruption ‘size’ it rates as a ‘6’ on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, having erupted an estimated 12 cubic kilometres of magma. Eruptions of this sort of size occur once every 100 – 200 years around the globe; while the largest known explosive volcanic eruptions erupt many thousands of cubic kilometres of magma over a very short period of time"

Mt St Helens, Eyjafjallajökull, Raikoke and many other volcanoes have changed atmosphere

Tonga in 2022 was a real beast (150ft tsunami)

"When the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted on Jan. 15, it sent a tsunami racing around the world and set off a sonic boom that circled the globe twice. The underwater eruption in the South Pacific Ocean also blasted an enormous plume of water vapor into Earth’s stratosphere – enough to fill more than 58,000 Olympic-size swimming pools. The sheer amount of water vapor could be enough to temporarily affect Earth’s global average temperature."

Fires, volcanoes, red skies = nothing new - regular occurrences in geologic time
No reason to kill 200k cows in Ireland (as currently being considered))

Yesterday's "What are Your Thoughts?" saw Josh Brown thinking the SEC going at COIN was actually a positive, and that's why the stock didn't totally collapse, and then rebounded.

The thinking being, the SEC is finally figuring out how it wants to deal with Crypto, and once they do, companies like COIN will comply.

You're an idiot.

Try actually reading what I wrote, ya f*ckin' moron.
His board handle is pretty ironic, considering how often he farts in threads as he just did in this one. If he keeps it up, we're gonna have to assign him the nickname "Kneejerk".

well, clearly, the CNN host was clueless.. but at a minimum, it was an attempt to get Bill Nye to link the asteroid to climate change if there were any way for him to do so.. or at least comment about climate change while he spoke about the asteroid.

The scientists who report on things like the medieval warming period or the 10000-year-old ice core samples that show very high temps on earth.. they are ignored or worse when it comes to discussing recorded history temperatures that are a blip on Earth's timeline. Why is that? My guess is it is because such information is not in line with some other agenda that is using the climate change story... that needs the "crisis". The political axiom "Do not let a crisis go to waste" has moved on to creating crises on demand.
No, they're ignored because they're irrelevant. The issue isn't that there haven't been far warmer and/or far colder times on this planet (although the medieval "warm" period was localized, not global, with global avg temps being cooler than today) - the issue is that we've never seen a warming rate this rapid (just like calculus - it's all about rates - our warming has been over decades vs. centuries to millenia) and it's obvious this is because of human activity and that there is the potential for catastrophic climate impacts in the next 50-100 years, perhaps in the lifetimes of people already born. I say potential, because this is based on the best climate models we have, but there's no absolute guarantee that the models are correct that far out or that some major change won't occur in climate forcing mechanisms (like the sun). But for now, that's the way to bet and what humanity should plan for.

According to weather.com wind will be shifting this afternoon which should make it better.
This is likely incorrect. Latest modeling from the NWS and latest update this morning is that the smoke and haze are on their way and ahead of schedule. Also, just because our winds are WNW/NW doesn't mean that the origin of our airflow is from that direction. With a large pinwheeling low up near the Canadian Maritimes, the counterclockwise flow is sending the smoky air from Quebec SW, then S, then SE over the air's 500+ mile path. And the NJDEP has issued a Code Red air quality alert through Thursday evening.

National Weather Service Mount Holly NJ
1012 AM EDT Wed Jun 7 2023

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Morning satellite shows a thick plume of smoke pushing through
northeastern PA and just about into our Carbon/Monroe counties
as of 10AM. The RAP/HRRR near surface smoke guidance differs on
both thickness and timing with this plume as it`s moving in a
bit quicker than guidance has suggested. This may be in part due
to it following along a surface trough which is accelerating its
movement. Either way, upstream obs indicate smoke and haze with
surface visibilities reaching down to 1-2 miles, with even sub
1 mile at times. RAP/HRRR indicate this push of smoke to linger
into the evening, though some improvements may come after
sunset, especially across the Poconos and Lehigh Valley. Nudged
MaxTs down a few degrees across the northern half of the
forecast area as this plume of smoke will likely hold temps a
few degrees lower than previously expected. Otherwise, the rest
of the forecast is on track...

A closed upper low associated with the eastern periphery of the
omega block over the CONUS will remain to our northeast through
tonight. The upper level and surface low will retrograde back
to the west across New England today. A thermal surface trough
will develop and extend westward into our area this afternoon
with high pressure located well to our northwest.

...AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT EDT THURSDAY NIGHT...

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued a
Code Red Air Quality Action Day for Fine Particulates, until
midnight EDT Thursday night.

An Air Quality Action day for Particulate Matter has been declared
for Wednesday, June 7th and Thursday, June 8th. Sensitive
individuals, including those with heart or lung disease, the elderly,
and the young should limit strenuous activities and the amount of
time active outdoors. Levels of fine particulates will rise into
unhealthy for sensitive groups category statewide today and Thursday
and likely last into the evening hours both days due to wildfire
smoke transport from eastern Canadian wildfires. In Addition, ozone
is forecast to reach the moderate category on Wednesday as sunny
skies, light winds, and warm temperatures are forecast for the Garden
State.

Even short distances you can see it's slightly hazy, with a bluish tinge to the air. Definitely smells more smoky today, last night was a really weird smell, smoke and something else.

Smell in the air seemed improved this morning to me but you could still smell it. They say it’s suppose to get worse again in the afternoon/evening.

VERY smokey down here in Cape May County, and has gotten a lot worse the last few hours. I got a nice smokey tan going though so thats a plus.

Coincidentally Kilauea volcano in Hawaii erupted this morning so it sounds like we are all about to be burned alive

Actually this is an anomalous event for the US. It’s extremely rare for smoke densities this high to cover this amount of area. Out west you only experience this is you are directly downstream from a fire and certain topographic features keep it bottled in specific areas. My AQI is 234 which is higher than most of the areas directly adjacent to the actual fires.
Not true Joey. We have experienced AQI > 200 quite a few times in the past few years when fires were greater than 250 miles away, worst was when California fires teamed up with British Columbia fires for a double team. Where in the west do you live?

I think most folks are just fed up with all this "settled science" that keeps falling on it's face.
I saw a great article about all of the "world's gonna end if we don't!" stories dating back to like the 30s. Every one turned out to be complete ******** and a grift of some kind. Same as this climate change nonsense going on now.

They can't even get straight what's gonna kill us this time. They just know it's gonna cost a **** ton of money and only they can spend it properly.

No thanks, I'll take the changing climate and figure it out. I'll grow more vegetables in NJ with the longer season.

Edited out the knightfan quote. Don't know where that came from.

Also, in case anyone is curious, especially if they have respiratory issues (like my wife and son), N95/KN95 masks do quite well, removing ~95% of smoke particulates, which are generally larger than viral particulates (sans the water droplets when viruses are coughed/sneezed out, which make the droplets containing viruses much larger than the 0.1 micron naked virus particles), as most smoke particulates are 1 micron or larger.

https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/EP...y are filter masks that,or the smell of smoke.

All we need now is a swarm of locusts and we'll have leveled up to apocalyptic.

Following the theory that every crisis is an opportunity, it occurs to me that this situation is a real opportunity for cannibals. Regular human must get old, night after night. Now they can mix things up and have some smoked human instead.

Show your work. I have no idea what "settled science" you're referring to that keeps falling on its face. There is no doubt the planet is warming and has been for awhile, due to human activities, while there is clearly uncertainty around ranges of future climate outcomes, which shouldn't surprise anyone, as predicting global climate decades ahead is pretty damn hard to do. Only a few nutjobs on the left have been implying the world is going to end due to climate change and they're not scientists. Grown-ups can have discussions about what to do about global warming.

Wonder if there's nuance to the naturally smoked field meat vs the prepackaged stuff you smoke at home.

Mmmmmm...rustic.

I'm sorry to say my local food store doesn't carry the prepackaged smoked human. I'm gonna try Wegmans - they have a broader selection (by which I mean, of course, that they carry more female smoked human).

Anomalous in the sense of total area affected, not that you can’t get these values to set up in CA. Ryan Maue (northeast meteorologist) was discussing this.

Did a brief stint in San Diego after college but wasn’t there when you had the double whammy.

Also, in many of the western valleys temperature inversions will trap smoke for days on end. At least in Oregon where I live, folks who can will escape to the coast to get breathable air!

As Tom Jones once said: "It's Not Unusual!"

You'd have to define " a while". In geological terms all of human existence is just a pimple on the earth's ***.

The narrative doesn't jibe with the ice age that was coming when I was in grade school.

My take is that the information about warming, cooling, locusts etc. is directly proportional to who is paying for the results and who benefits the most.

That is the state of "science" today. Some amount of sanity needs to be restored. If we can't agree on basic scientific facts (what is a woman?). How can we have any rational discussion? The facts are what they say they are today. Society can't function that way. Which is the reason for all this crap.

I'll just keep plugging along using the common sense that God and my parents gave me . I have a feeling I'll be just fine.
