We played 18 at Spooky Brook today (2:30 tee time). More cars in the lot than what I expected.
Biggest problem the not knowing how far the ball traveled; as it would disappear after about 150 yards. So if you were in the rough, the radius had to be fairly big to find your ball.

Well, mask posts are relevant because N95/KN95 masks remove about 95% of smoke particulates if worn properly, as I had mentioned earlier. That's worth communicating to people.

Maybe it's time to take up disc golf. It's free, it's usually a more rigorous walk (more like hiking), and no government henchmen to muck things up, lol. Was outside all afternoon and evening today, like yesterday. Smoke, shmoke...at least for those of us with superhuman respiratory systems - in all seriousness, it was bad out there for anyone with issues (my wife starting coughing as soon as she was outside in it for a few minutes and spent the day indoors and we changed our air filters today, as they looked like soot).
Conditions are slowly starting to improve, smoke-wise, and tomorrow should be a bit better than today, with the air quality alert being “orange” (unhealthy for sensitive groups) vs. today’s red (unhealthy for all) to purple (very unhealthy for all) and even hazardous in NYC and parts of NJ, depending on where one was. In fact, NYC's air quality index hit its highest level since the AQI was established in 1999 (377 - considered hazardous).

Tomorrow, winds will start to shift more towards the west, as the vertically stacked low to our NE retrogrades into New England, shifting the worst of the smoke westward and Friday’s air quality will be even better due to a further wind shift, combined with likely showers.

Note that the high AQI levels are largely due to the PM2.5 levels, i.e., particulates < 2.5 microns, resulting from incomplete combustion of wood/cellulouse from the fires in Quebec. Prior to the passage of the Clean Air Act in 1970, many US cities had episodes of particulate pollution, from poorly controlled burning of fossil fuels in power plants, cars, incinerators, etc., similar to what we're seeing from these fires. Horrible smog (smoke/fog) outbreaks in the years prior to 1970 in many major US cities, including NYC (usually from a meteorological inversion trapping pollutants locally) were a major impetus for passage of the Clean Air Act, which has been a huge success for air quality and public health.

You should be fine, as smoke/haze levels will be much better on Friday than today/yesterday, although we'll likely still have some smoke/haze around.

As per the article below, even major volcanic eruptions typically only emit about 10-50 MM metric tons of CO2, which is a drop in the bucket when compared to the 29 billion metric tons of C02 emitted per year by humanity (that's with a "b" - a billion is a 1000 times more than a million, just in case you weren't aware). It's pretty wild - reminds me a bit of the day we had the partial solar eclipse a few years ago, where it was much darker than normal at midday, but in addition, there was the low visibility, as it was hard to see beyond 1/10th of a mile today (about 500') when we were playing disc golf, and the ever present smoke smell. Fortunately, I have no respiratory issues.
Mask litter is unfortunate, but masks work, albeit imperfectly, for both virus-laden droplets and even larger sized smoke particulates, as I've explained in deep detail, since I've done primary research on mask efficacy with particulates. During the pandemic, mask efficacy went down considerably once omicron subvariants evolved with 3-5X greater infectiousness than the original strain; fortunately, by then, vaccines were widely available.
With regard to particulates from smoke, most air quality hazards are short-lived and localized and the vast majority of people can avoid the hazards by staying indoors, especially those with respiratory issues, so mass deployment of masks seems like the wrong solution to me.
The NY governor is telling ppl to stay inside if you don't have to go out. Has a familiar ring to it doesn't it ?
I thought of the same thing. Everything has that weird glow, same as on that eclipse day.
There's many reasons for the smoke down to the lower US . Climate change is absolutely making for optimal conditions to make this happen to this degree.
