Favorite remake or remix of a “yacht rock” song?
what happened to music and talented artists
Consult the master list below - it's more about songs than artists, i.e., some songs by certain artists are Yacht Rock and some by the same artists aren't.What the hell is a yacht Rock song? Only thing I grew up with is good music, cheap music, and unfortunately disco.
Yacht Rock is very hit or miss for me (like Taylor Swift, lol). Love some of it, hate some of it and some is in between. But while often enjoyable, IMO, very little of it has the edge and passion that great rock and roll does, whether it's from the 60s, the 90s or today.
Thank you for asking. Never heard that term before. What the hell is a yacht Rock song? Only thing I grew up with is good music, cheap music, and unfortunately disco.
Bedford Rd in the Kendall Park section. I’ve been in the house many times, good family friends.Donald Fagen grew up in South Brunswick
One of my all time favorites to listen to before a game!!! Plus Kenny Loggins "This is it"...Then switch to ACDC!
But back to the OPs post...How can you go wrong with the one hit wonder, Gino Vannelli, "I Just Wanna Stop" ?![]()
This stuff is not really in my wheelhouse. In fact, most of these songs put me to sleep, lol. Not that I don’t like them, or that they suck. They don’t. They just literally make me tired. Maybe it’s the warm, comfortable blanket of nostalgia. Which is palpable to me. And maybe the most important aspect to music.
But, I really like the live stuff that you and others put here. This one was particularly good. Loved seeing Fleetwood and Nicks coming out.
To answer your question, I’m not sure what happened. It’s just different. You realize that there was nothing like the stuff you linked here BEFORE the 70s/80s right? So, all the music in this thread was different and cutting edge compared to what came before. Maybe technology has to do with it too. You can record a whole album on your iPad from your bedroom.
Gonna go sideways a bit here. You must have seen the below. I love it. Why? First, the mashup of the 2 genres is delicious. Then, you have an UNREHEARSED song, with only the musicianship to guide it through. And, it friggen rocks! Love the non verbal cues when Grohl twirls his fingers, saying “We’re coming around again boys!”, Rick instantly gets it and picks it up a notch. Then he knows to lay back for the solo. Just awesome.
To me, a 70s/80s guy (like you) who grew up in bands and playing a lot of my life, this is the magic of music. It’s hard to describe what the feeling is that these guys just felt. I imagine that world class musicians have this experience more than most. I’ve been lucky to play with some people over the years, some that I knew for decades, some that I literally played with ONE night, and felt that….magic. It doesn’t happen often. And the weird part is, if you are playing with like 4 other guys, and only like one or two others make this connection, it’s almost like another language that you are conversing in. The non verbal communication, sometimes eye contact/sometimes not. Just being in such synch with another person(s), that you both KNOW, ok, we’re picking it up here…or laying back…or trading 4s…or WHATEVER. You are just on the same page, and know enough that THIS is time and place for THAT, and you just…do it. It is an unbelievably special feeling.
For the musicians out there, I think you know what I’m talking about. The closest may be if you were in a really in depth and fascinating conversation with someone who was both super smart (maybe smarter than you) and super interesting. But, you are holding your own and are really playing off each other, in a verbal ping-ponging of thoughts and ideas. At the end, they feel as satisfied as you do. But, it’s more than just that. There is an intimacy. A giving and taking. A sharing. An openness. THAT is what is in the video. The fact that it’s out there gives me hope. Because once you’ve felt it, it’s kind of like crack, lol. You keep chasing that high, because it feels so damn good.
Pop music has been absolute crap since 1998'ish when Britney and the boy bands took over. Two decades and counting of garbage.I hate 99.9 percent of music since about 2012 and generally most music since about 2005. What is lacking is any passion or ability to make meaningful lyrics on any consistent basis. Sure some will post that there is a lot of great music out there that you just arent looking for blah blah blah but at the end of the day these artists have a couple of songs and the rest is forgettable. The newer stuff that I can bear to listen to is still extremely derivative of the 60s-90s and yes all music is derivative from the 80s and 90s but this is really watered down. The technology has made it worse. The incorporation of dance beats in virtually every song is a travesty. And its not like its because Im old and I have lost my edge. I turn on Alt 92.3 and laugh, that isnt alternative or rock music, not sure what that is. Why even play the charade of playing older alt songs from the 90s on that station. I didnt lose my edge, rock and roll lost its edge
At 52. Surprisingly im a little young for the yacht rock era, grew up listening to this music in my 6-13 years but remember all this stuff. Listened to the radio like crazy as a kid, I was religious about listening to the Casey Kasem top 40 and would be scribbling down the WABC year end top 100 back in the 70s. These songs all bring back warm nostalgic memories and I think thats why people have such a fondness for them. I was heavily into new wave after this and then heavily into grunge. Those are my top 2 genres
I find stuff like Taylor Swift to be boring and sort of phony. She followed every production trend in music in the past decade. Its great she likes to rail on her boyfriends and the clapping seals applaud, how awful are men. But beyond that she lacks any edge and its not like she has an act like Britney. Love alot of female vocalists from the 70s through 90s but do not see anything special with her. She is popular, branded and she does great at the whole package. Kudos to her for that. She isnt Madonna or Beyonce or Cher or Diana Ross or Aretha or Annie Lennox or PJ Harvey or Stevie Nicks or Ann Wilson. She sells alot of records in a really poor artistic period for the music business.
leave the Swifties to their pillow talk
Yes, that's exactly what happened. It's ok to admit it.And its not like its because Im old and I have lost my edge.
