started in the 90s. continued and refined in the 00's. Dipset, Nelly as fashion pioneers. Rocawear, Sean John. Fitted caps, Mitchell and Ness jerseys. The white tees that were more like dresses.

Try again.
Nice try. LOL! 90s for both. You are struggling here on the 2000s and 2010s. Anyone can list tons and tons of unique cultural icons from the other decades.

again, its because you likely didn't care to pay attention. 2000's - the rise of hip hop as pop, big baggy jeans, the fast and the furious, remember the titans, south park, etc.

yes, the machine has moved on, we're in the era of nicki minaj, cardi b, and megan the stallion. pick-a-breathy-sounding-"edgy" female singer. retro-ish sounding, high pitched male-led bands.

But, but, but Taylor is so talented! Forget about her auto-tune earpiece. LOL.

Ya.....I've been to multiple Metallica concerts.

100% I'd rather go to a Taylor Swift concert than these "Yacht Rock" bands.

But you do you.
Can't really see mocking pop in a thread dedicated to "soft rock".

Also...I definitely wouldn't have picked Enter Sandman for when music was powerful or no apologies.
Maybe "Fuel", "4 Horseman" or "Ride The Lightning".
Nothing quite like a good electric chair song.

It wasn't just the song, but also the epic setting and the historic timing of it.

Sorry to hear you like Taylor Swift. But you do you.

And the SP movie was 99, which was the peak. He is very confused with his decades! LOL.
The Scott tenorman episode, medicinal Marijuana episode, world of Warcraft episode, scientology episode all did not happen until the 00's. Those are all iconic.

Started in the 90s, movie in the 90s, peaked in the 90s. But once again, you continue to miss the point. The unique character and feel of a decade isn't about listing the most popular shows, songs, or movies. It's about the uniqueness of being able to instantly place sometime to a decade even if you are seeing/hearing it for the first time. Other decades have this quality. The 2000s and 2010s do not.

and you're still wrong. its very easy to place a song from the 00s...but because you choose to be ignorant of it, you choose not to recognize it. the growth of dirty south in hip hop, backpacker rap, the pop punk scene, a lot of nu-metal, the fusion of EDM and what was considered traditional pop and r&b...that's the 00s. just because one genre of music wasn't dominant doesn't mean that there aren't iconic sounds within the growing universe of music available in the decade. the 10s brought mumble rap, trap, mainstreaming of EDM, that breathy billie eilish/lorde/halsey subgenre. those are unique sounds. whether you like them or not, that's a different story.

You're arguing with people who consistently show no ability to think critically. The entire premise of this thread - that Yacht Rock is somehow "manly" - is ludicrous. There's some fine YR music and a lot of drek too (same for any genre, really, although I do find the drek quotient pretty high for YR) and you've done a fine job of showing that the last 20 years have had plenty of cultural/musical icons and touchstones, but they'll simply never see them, because they aren't looking.

Since some of the discussion has been about musical labels, subgenres, etc, I will add the view of an older guy . When I first started to get serious into music in the early - mid 70s, there were basically 5 major genres of music. Classical, Jazz, R&B, Rock and Country. Folk and Blues were connected to R&B and Country. Over the last 30 + years there has been an explosion in labels and “sub genres” when people write or discuss music, I think to the detriment of the art. Jimi Hendrix listened to just about everything and you can hear bits and pieces of it all in his playing. Rock music has been heavily influenced by R&B, Country and to some extent Jazz and Classical. In my view, the best rock music incorporates many influences and is diversified. When artists, music producers , etc are constrained to a strict sub genre or sound it limits the art. Many years ago I read a review and the writer labeled a song as a “post punk power pop ballad”……What? In the end, how does it sound and does it reach you on an emotional or spiritual level.

LOL! Wow, you just belched a ton of secondary/minor items that most will never know or recognize. Thanks for proving my point so incredibly well.

Michael McDonald......when music was "powerful and unapologetic"......

Soft Rock...err...Yacht Rock is terrible.

I like that some are trying to put Metallica and Iron Maiden in the "Yacht Rock" thread.
Real amusing.

The longest I've ever listened to Michael McDonald is in the background of these scene.

If you like to listen to "Yacht Rock" without the awful really g-d awful Thurston Howell voiceover, Sirius/XM The Blend channel 16 is pretty good.

Another name for "Yacht Rock" is "Songs and artists you don't dare admit to liking, but really do". Surprisingly, Barry Manilow is not a Yacht Rocker.

Ironically, I never heard the term Yacht Rock in my life (grew-up in the 80s). However, since this was a thread making fun of Taylor Swift and old men that like her, I eagerly joined in. :)
