RIP!! As Tico Brown said, he did change TV, and was a pretty legendary character.
Went to his show with a couple buddies in college, which was a blast.

Was also Mayor of Cincinnati
Yes! lived in Cincy briefly. Interesting city for a conservative place, when I was there, the Mayor was the first openly gay/lesbian mayor of a midwest city. Fun town- so much so, we left in less than a year.

Springer show was the sewer of America opening-up.
Lowest denominator and all that

The heady days of late 80s daytime.

On the one hand we had Oprah Winfrey, new on the scene, to tell everyone that whatever was wrong with their lives was someone else's fault.

On the other, there was Jerry - whose message to those same people was that it was perfectly fine to act like wild, inbred hobos.

Don your finest mumus, break free of your trailer parks, go forth and plunder the land!

I get it, the guy's dead and there were probably people who loved him and that's a shame, but for me... good riddance.

He also paid a prostitute with a check while he was a city councilman. He later became Mayor. He was an example of the old maxim that the only things that can end a political career are a dead girl or a live boy.

Springer proved that people enjoyed watched reality TV to feel good about themselves, to say, "At least we're not like THEM." And they were paraded in front of a raucous audience like a human zoo.

Yes, Springer tried to be a legit talk show. Then something happened where someone got a little crazy and ratings went up. Producers said, "We want more of THAT." And it kept getting crazier and crazier until a guy killed another guy because of something that happened on the show the previous day. The show scaled back and that was the Jump The Shark moment.

Jenny Jones was the show where a guy killed another guy. There were several instances where the "guests" on Springer and other shows were actors, and many of the fights were staged.

My wife's cousin is an actor/waiter. He's had small parts in a few big films and walk-on roles on TV shows.

Early in his career one of his gigs was "brawling guest" on Springer.

He got rich appealing to the lowest common denominator, then tried to rise above it at the end of his shows with phony sermons. Can't say we gained much from that.

If you're going to trash the Jerry Springer show, you have to credit the guy who started all of the BS, Morten Downey Jr. Otherwise, all of you need to ZIP IT. 😊

I never watched Downey. He was the perfect caricature of the guy who was told not to put his keys in the bowl at the key party.

He tested out HL Mencken's theory and proved it to be correct:You can never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people

In his later years Jerry was a regular at the Sarasota Farmers Market on Saturday mornings.

He was friendly to all but how to strike up a convo with him?

ā€œHey Jerry, love the show!ā€

May he RIP.

Wally George created the genre of combat TV, but he was west coast. He was also Rebecca DeMornay's dad.

The sewers are saying "leave me out of this - at least my mess flushes away. What you all have is just swirling!"
