The Colonials name might be availableIn other news about sports teams from DC, the Commanders may be forced to change their team name...again...due to the fact that Commanders violated trademark agreements.
I was partial to the Football Team personally for their team name. The Colonials name might be available![]()
I don’t get how it violates the tenets of political correctness to imply that they represent a colony.
Usually it’s the colonizers that some folks consider to be evil, not the colonizees.
Maybe I’m missing something.

Should have gone with Windtalkers. In other news about sports teams from DC, the Commanders may be forced to change their team name...again...due to the fact that Commanders violated trademark agreements.
And that’s how the Bullets became the Wizards.Hmmm.. interesting.. I get it, I think..
Colonials implies GW the Colonial.. a slave-holding invader of indigenous peoples' lands
Revolutionaries implies GW the Revolutionary General standing up against "The Man".
Makes sense... I guess.
But perhaps if they were going to make a change.. it is the "GW" that should change along with "Colonials" and rebrand the whole damn thing.
Capitol University Caps.. as in "I'm gonna cap your ***".
because the Colonials were bad racist menwhy are they changing the name?
Spent my youth there. I get it, but they'll always be the Bullets to me.And that’s how the Bullets became the Wizards.
Why the change is the question?Just something to argue about and act like we have a stake in the name change.
:YesNo
For some what I said might be a revolutionary thought and they're whine about it.

Why the change?I just peeked in the thread to enjoy watching people complain about something utterly inconsequential to everybody except the organization in question, for whom it's only 99.9% inconsequential and only very briefly at that.
Where's the popcorn-eating emoji when we need it? Hm... best I can do is...

Because we must be embarrassed, ashamed, and scorned for our history and culture, please, get with the program or risk getting canceled. Why the change?
Why do you associate wondering or questioning something with freaking out?
Is it your nature to completely ignore an inconsequential change just because it has no direct effect on you?
Since 99.9 % of colonists were dirt poor, disease ridden people fighting for their families lives and freedom, why the change?
At times there have been threads about what nickname you would choose for Rutgers if they hadn't been the Scarlet Knights. It was always difficult finding a "New Jersey unique" nickname that wasn't a "stretch' to explain. But my own choice would have been the Rutgers Revolution.
Just like the Revolutionaries, they would probably forever be "The Revs" in newspaper headlines. Well, good luck to GW.
And I'm good with the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.
New owner, another new name. The Commanders was an awful choice. Need a redo!In other news about sports teams from DC, the Commanders may be forced to change their team name...again...due to the fact that Commanders violated trademark agreements.
I always thought the bullets was appropriate for DC at the timeSpent my youth there. I get it, but they'll always be the Bullets to me.

Not only that but the American revolutionaries did not abolish slavery in the South, so I don't understand how they could possibly be associated with that group. Maybe they mean Castro and the Cuban revolutionaries, that would make more sense. The Revs? A symbol of Protestant oppression!!!!! Where's my safe space! And those revolutionaries were colonials, so they were oppressors too!!!!
Yeah, thank you, Zappa. Mildone is one of my favorites, but I didn't think the characterization of my post was accurate. I was certainly not freaking out. In fact, although I think the reasoning is silly, I commented that the new name is "cooler."Why the change?

So descends from colonists whose families were ravaged by sickness, disease, British tyranny and courageously fought back shouldn’t be recognized?Because we must be embarrassed, ashamed, and scorned for our history and culture, please, get with the program or risk getting canceled.
Yeah, it could just go on and on if we let it (and we do). For example, we revere the "Greatest Generation," who really were great, but after they came home from the war, they didn't seem very concerned about how badly black people, including war veterans, were treated. Not only that but the American revolutionaries did not abolish slavery in the South, so I don't understand how they could possibly be associated with that group. Maybe they mean Castro and the Cuban revolutionaries, that would make more sense.
99%!! Holy hyperbole Batman. Plenty of rich folk were revolutionaries- Washington, Hancock, Mason, Jefferson etc were definitely not poor. Also large # of colonists were Tories who fought against the revolution. Benedict Arnold’s wife came from a Tory family. Intersting reference if you are interested is Tories by Thomas B. Allen. Fighting between Tory and patriot militias was pretty brutal After the war large numbers of Tories wound up leaving for other British possession, those that stayed were not treated very well. Why the change?

Very interesting, did not know that. I will be checking that out, thank you, Hoquat...Interesting reference if you are interested is Tories by Thomas B. Allen. You’re more than welcome. The history we learned in school (for me 50’s and 60’s) glossed over a lot.Very interesting, did not know that. I will be checking that out, thank you, Hoquat...
ETA: I guess I should have known that, but I didn't. In history, we tend to generalize, and leave out the rough edges, such as what happened after independence to those who passionately did not want independence. Thank you again for mentioning this book...
