OT: Verizon internet deal

In return for a 2 year contract,Verizon increased my speed from 100 to 300 and reduced my monthly bill by 30 dollars.
What the bill will be in the Summer of '25 is anyone guess but for now $59.99 a month to me is a great deal

Maybe 500 down but up is probably 25 - 35 mbps because it's asynchronous. Unless you have fiber from them which usually only certain businesses and government have.

I've been getting 300/$50 for 3 years (no plan)
I use my own router so I save there and have a better router
Verizon had been becoming pirates for awhile - took me a year and many phone calls to get the router charge dropped.
They never paid me back for a year of router charges when I didn't have a Verizon router.

Otherwise its been the best internet
The fiber cables are pretty new and less damage prone than the local cable.
The cable trucks are everywhere after a big storm and hardly any Verizon trucks
The amount of cable spaghetti hanging from utility polls is impressive.

I just got a notice that I can pay $10 a month less if Verizon can auto debit
Never let Verizon auto debit because they could cling to you like a tick even when you want to be free

Nice! Is that with a contract or no contract? And mobile discount? I am no contract and not a Verizon wireless user but I think I would get $30 off if I was. The gig is needed with 3 working from home and I stream all TV.

No contract. I do have wireless through Verizon too but I don't think that was a factor.

You wont need the gig:

• Netflix recommends download speeds of 25 Mbps for 4K HDR video. That means you’d need 40 simultaneous streams—10 times more than what Netflix’s 4K plan even allows—to make full use of a gigabit connection.
• Zoom recommends speeds of 3.8 Mbps for 1080p videoconferencing. Bandwidth would only become a problem if you had more than 263 video calls going at the same time.
• Tidal reports a maximum bitrate of 9216 Kbps for master quality streaming audio. You’d have to stream on more than 108 devices at a time to run out of bandwidth on a gigabit connection.

A Vette on 42nd St doesnt mean you'll be going faster than the crowd.

Interesting stats but the fact is during COVID when I had 3 full time remote from home (and at least 25 + devices hitting the network), the 100/200 service became unstable often. We had to turn off video at times. I switched to the gig service and no issues. I may not need the full gig but I see it as an insurance policy against the embarrassment of telling clients and prospects that I have to go off video because my connection is weak. It’s not much more than I was paying before anyway.

It was $34.99 but went up $5 when I selected $20 in discounts on my wireless plan (which is currently $125 for 4 unlimited 5G lines). $20 off 55+ senior discount plus $10 per line for auto pay to Verizon CC that also gives points and a monthly $5 discount. Just got the young adults a free new Apple 14 each and didn't pay any upgrade fees (20 year loyal customer). Bundle baby Bundle lol.

Family shares phone plan and Streaming Plans saving HUNDREDS per year.

So maybe paying more works, but not because most people are actually using the extra capacity.

They dug a junction I guess near the sidewalk and from there removed the top layer of grass, dug a little trench and laid the fiber cable right to your house. After that was all done, I switched from Comcast to FIOS and been customer ever since.

For me, the wired connection is always the advertised speed. The wireless connection can be about 25-75% of the advertised speed and that’s with a mesh network.

How he explained it is You are wired to your house. But your service is co mingled up to that point. So they can throttle service at any point along their fiber.

I’ve been having big problems with a few services on fire stick over Fios internet. No problems on laptop or tablet. Same fire stick works fine if I use a hotspot with similar bandwidth and signal strength. I feel like they are working the peer pressure angle to upgrade lol. Worked fine for years. Bought new sticks, no change.
