Honest question, looking for an educated response since this board has turned into politico... Why was society, statues, Aunt Jemima, Uncle Ben, monuments, team names, buildings, food, drinks, vehicles, viruses, wind, rain, air and everything else not racist whenever we had a black president for 8 years but it's the end of the world now if it's not changed immediately?
There were changes and calls for changes then too. The backlash against a political view that seems to want to return to the “good old days” of the 1950’s has accelerated the effort. I grew up during the fifties. It was a simpler time in most ways. But certainly not better for many people.
I’m old, male and white. And sometimes I get disturbed with the radicalization and the violence. But when you look at the millions of people who are calling for changes, and put yourself in their place, it’s hard to argue that we need to take a hard look in the mirror.
I came of age in the sixties and seventies. Was too apathetic or too strictly raised to march and protest. And some of the violence then was wrong. Including the four kids shot at Kent State and some of the police and military response. But also including the burnings and lootings. Let’s face it folks. My generation started this stuff. And we were just as idealistic and sadly, just as violent in many cases. Change happened. But it was a start. Now, as a society, we have to decide what other changes are needed. Hopefully, we can do that without tearing ourselves apart.

The odd thing in all this is that all these things people are protesting were mostly all done by democrats. I really find that odd. Slavery, KKK, Confederate flag, all those confederate monuments. Who do you think put them up?? I had a friend that sent me something about the confederate flag he was trying to support. I told him brother you are fighting a losing fight. That flag don't belong to me. I'm not really offended by it but that flag belongs to the democrats. It's their history not mine. You need to really think about that. When I got old enough to vote we didn't even have a Republican primary in NC. Most people including me registered as democrats because of it. Democrats have had a strangle hold on this State for way too long. They don't do anything for anyone but themselves. Those asking why Obama didn't do this or that you now have your answer. The only thing Obama did in this country was stir race relations to a historic low since the 60's. We are still seeing the results of it.

If you knew history, which you obviously don’t, you would know that the parties realigned after the civil rights movement. There’s a reason that the Confederate South is almost all Republican these days. It’s not a coincidence friend...

Its not just the South that has changed. Its been the whole country minus the big liberal cities. Democrats have gone crazy in this country. They have caved to the crazies.

I disagree with you but some of that is a matter of opinion.

However, to claim that the current Democratic Party is responsible for the KKK, confederate monuments, and the Confederate flag is simply lying. It’s leaving out a significant portion of US History.

Heck, if someone flies the “stars and bars”, and calls it the Confederate flag, I immediately assume that person to be a moron who doesn’t understand their own history. They can’t differentiate between the Confederate flag and the battle flag.

This isn't a "left" or "right" issue. There are names for teams that have been offensive for quite some time that have not been changed because those asking for said names to be change voices weren't loud enough.

Take the Redskins name for instance. It's obviously a slur, but since the native population is so low and their economic reach isn't as far as other ethnicities their call for change fall on deaf ears. Now that we're finally addressing issues after years, decades, and centuries of wrongs you have to expect them to take advantage of the situation.

These are the days of righting wrongs. If you can't get down with that then you're lost.

BS.

This is 100% a left "issue". Typical lefty response...."I know more than you...you just aren't educated or enlightened...you're lost...."

Lions being used as mascots offends me...how about that? Doesn't do justice to the proud animal that has had to endure so much due to any native and non-native countryman hunting him for sport or for food. Really is demeaning to the animal too because we aren't honoring that species properly after hunting, slaughtering and killing it so many times.

The last time I checked my wife's Facebook account, (a week ago) around 4,000 people had signed the petition to keep the "Red Raider" mascot at South Point. Of course in this day and time 50,000 might not be enough.

Sadly people that live in SP will not be the driving force behind it if it happens. I will not let opinions in this thread sway me one way or the other with the way I respond to people here. I think we have all done a good job of respecting each other. I'm fine with someone not liking my opinion. We are all here because we love high school football. As a Wolfpack fan I appreciate you tarheel fans. If they change your mascot to the pansies you can join me with the Wolfpack!! :p:p:p

Actually I do. The Stars and Bars is the actual Confederate flag hence why I put the quotation marks around stars and bars. Not the battle flag that people fly today and call the Confederate flag. I wonder how many people even know the difference? Got any more brain busters?

I think they should just change the name to the Tar Holes personally. Much more fitting.

4,000 lint heads don’t carry the political weight necessary to stop the PC train.

Lol and I bet you think cnn is news!

See everyone, this poor person has had their brain rotted out by propaganda. This is why it’s important to get information from a wide range of sources. Don’t stay in your bubble! You don’t want to end up like Wonders89.

Heck, the “Indian Leader” in that video isn’t actually an Indian. LOL

I don’t know why y’all keep pushing the Redskins thing so much anyway. The name is getting changed and the process has already started. Just like the Jim Crowe statues, and the Confederate flag, etc. Your views are in the minority and the country is moving on. Trumps own Secretary of Defense effectively banned the Confederate flag in all military institutions today. I mean, when you lose NASCAR, you’ve lost that argument.

It doesn’t matter if you huff and puff, lash out, whine, etc. It’s just the facts. As Ben Shapiro says “Facts don’t care about your feelings”.

I don’t disagree with you on everything though. I think the Tar Heel thing is stupid. Just because something came from a certain time period does not mean it should be tied to slavery, racism, etc. Just because Washington and Jefferson were slave owners doesn’t mean we should forget what they helped build and create. Acknowledge the good in these people but don’t cover up the warts either. Historical figures were humans of their time after all and they should be judged in that way.

I also don’t think the SP Red Raider mascot is even the same ballpark as the “Redskins” in terms of being bad. I don’t see a problem with it. It’s important to have perspective and not take a blanket approach to everything.

Also, don’t rot your brain by constantly consuming propaganda. It hurts you in the long run.

Redskins/ Red Raiders I see no difference. Our mascot in Vanceboro use to be the Farm Life Red Raiders then they built the New School and changed to the Eagles. That is probably already offensive to some.

SHS Lion, I agree with everything you said accept the very last line. I don't really care if I offend folks with my beliefs. On the other hand, I don't intentionally try to offend anyone. Our beliefs are who and what we are. If I'm ever proven wrong in my beliefs, I'll apologies and pray for forgiveness from God and man.

Yea, I read that article earlier today. When you have people on the inside plotting against you, your in trouble. If you don't believe it just look at Donald Trump.
