Possibility for no bowl game?

Kentucky sits at 5-3 playing a down Georgia team on Saturday hopefully in a packed CWS. I believe Kentucky wins this game which would answer my question itself, but if worst case scenario happens and UK finishes 6-6 (Austin Peay being that win) is there a possibility of not getting a bowl bid. I know 6 wins makes a team eligible, last year however 5-6 teams were granted bowl games for lack of 6 win teams. Is there a possibility a surplus of 6 win teams keeps that Kentucky team? Again I believe Kentucky wins this weekend and is competitive from here out with a possibility to win out.

We are in the sec... We would still have 4 SEC wins.. There's a 0% chance we don't make a bowl if we have 6 wins

The short answer is that there is an infinitesimally small chance that UK would not get a bowl game at 6-6.

The longer answer is that there are 78 bowl slots and currently 37 teams with at least 6 wins. Also, there are currently 45 other teams that are not bowl eligible with at least a .500 record (so they are on pace to become bowl eligible). Add those two numbers together and you get 82 teams currently for 78 spots, including 11 of the 14 teams from the SEC.

The SEC essentially has 10 bowl tie-ins: Sugar, Capital One (vs Big Ten/ACC), Outback (vs Big Ten), Music City (vs ACC/Big Ten), Gator (vs ACC/Big Ten), Liberty (vs Big 12), Texas (vs Big 12), Belk (vs ACC), Birmingham (vs TBA) and Advocare V100 (vs ACC) bowls. Of course, it is a virtual certainty that the SEC also has a team in the CFP, so UK would be guaranteed one of the SEC's 11 bids at 6-6.

Is this a serious question? 6-6, in the SEC? Really? Do you forget who we are? UK fans travel like crazy and spend money like they have it, this team will go bowling...

There will be 5-7 teams that bowl and did last year. To many bowls means they all have to still be filled

I didn't think it was that bad of a question based on last years bowl issues. OP, I didn't take your question as negative or flaming. Glad you asked and someone actually gave an informative answer.

You can relax. There's a way better chance of us running the table to win the SEC East, beating Bama in Atlanta, and heading somewhere like the Sugar Bowl than there is of us being left out of a bowl game at 6-6.

College football began allowing 12 games (up from 11) per season back around 2002. So it would have only been in the last 14 years or so and I don't recall that ever happening.

I should say, absent a post-season ban. UK missed a bowl in 2002 despite a 7-5 record.

Pushup Man's analysis is correct. To expand a bit more, the SEC will have a MINIMUM of 10 bids, assuming enough teams qualify. They will almost certainly have a team in the playoff, and will probably have another team in an at large NYD bowl. Assume the worst and that's realistically 11 teams from the SEC that are going if enough qualify.

Now, it's very unlikely that Miss. St. and Missouri win 6 games. Not with their remaining schedules. Vandy is not likely to win 6, though it's possible. SCar. and Ole Miss are not guaranteed to win 6, but I have to think they probably do. For that matter, even Georgia could fail to win 6.

So, at worst, that's 12 SEC teams for only 11 teams. Keep in mind that it's probably going to be 12 teams for 12 spots, 10 or 11 teams for 12 spots, or maybe 10 or 11 teams for 11 spots. But, in the worst case scenario, 1 SEC team doesn't go to a SEC bowl. The loser of this game of musical chairs is much more likely to be Vandy or South Carolina than UK, unless one of those two teams explodes and wins MORE than 6. UK will have beaten both teams head to head. UK will have had a better SEC record than Vandy.

But even the loser of this game of musical chairs would still be very likely to get a bowl invite from an open slot in a non-SEC affiliated bowl game.

So, while it's possible that a 6 win UK team gets left out, it's about 1% at most.
