Johnathan Smith for MA. Has been a staple to their backfield for two years and will be major player this year. He will have plenty of help in backfield this year

Time for the QB's This is a tough one. I really like a couple.
1. Chase Swartz @ N. Surry. A senior this year and with great accuracy.
2. Holden Poindexter @ MA Had a record setting season last year. ? is how good is he without the Greene brothers to throw it to.

If I was a betting man with the Greene brothers gone you see poindexter turn into more of a traditional bear qb. Those short passes in the flats a pass down field every once in awhile, with him extending the pocket and running it a bit when those passes aren’t there. The weapons for poindexter are there. Early prediction, 10-1 and a number 1 seed in the west for this team , if what I’m hearing is true , this offense and team will be extremely good.

1. Chase Swartz of course. He would have been our third 2,000 yard passer in school history last year and possibly the leading passer for a season if that play vs East hadn't happened, that still frustrates me quite a bit and I hope he gets another shot at I want to see it happen. On the bright side when he came back for conference after the Atkins game he was pissed and played harder than he ever has which helped the offense make up for Smith getting hurt.

7 on 7 wise he looked fantastic last week. He's learned to be patient and not force throws as much, we have a solid WR core this year so I'm excited to see what happens. If the RB's take a little while to get going he may get a lot of yards the first 2 weeks. If not then I see the offense being even. We did finish with more passing yards than rushing for the first time since we started doing the passing offense last year.

2. Poindexter I guess by default due to his stats, none of the other QB's in Surry/Stokes are that convincing to me right now. He is really fortunate to have had the talent he has had.. without them I'm not sure if he coulda got there being so young. He woulda done okay in 18 but Greene's 1 and 2 woulda made anyone look good. 2020's gonna show what he really has and it might be interesting. In 2017 on JV he had to carry things by himself.

HM/Players to Watch: You don't have to count this Heart Pump if you don't want too but these are the kids I think that could have good years. Figured I'd give them a look since no one else would mention them.

-Treyson Mabe from North Stokes I think has a lot of potential to be a solid QB for them. He has the best arm since the all state kid was there when Lippard was there. He can chunk it, and he threw it all over West Wilkes last year. Seen him in middle school and he could then too. If he gets some coaching and gets in the weight room I see him doing something this year. Their non conference schedule is quite competitive for them and I see him doing okay in it. The South Davidson and Chatham Central games could be quite interesting, especially the latter considering their QB's thrown for close to 4,000 yards in 2 years of play. Might be a QB duel.

-The Godbey kid from Elkin could be pretty good. He runs the option as good and as seemless as any QB they've had since Wood's been there, ? mark is his arm. He didn't throw it that outstanding from what I remember when we played them last year. If he can get it going they could do well in that conference. He was West Wilkes's best player but for Elkin to get him was a nice get, West will be rough without him.

-Hear a lot of talk on South's QB Carrick, kid can run and chunk it good. If Diamont can settle him down a little bit into an I QB he could be one of the better QB's South has had in a long time. He loves to run it so I hope Diamont uses that some.

I hear that a lot slash, poindexter had the Greene brothers, don’t get me wrong , that’s two studs to toss the ball to. But let’s be realistic and give the kid some credit, he did have to make those throws, he did have to put the ball in their hands. I realize that a lot of those yards came after the catch was made, but the kid still had to make the throw. You seen my prediction on the bears this year, my prediction for the kid is he tosses it for over a thousand and runs it for 6 - 700 plus. Wanna bet a pork chop sandwich on it?

Was the godbey Elkin QB on varsity last year?

No he was their JV QB last year, he was West's JV QB the year before that. He may have got moved up but we played him on JV. He was good. First JV QB in a long time I was impressed by honestly; love the way he runs the option, if I was an HC he'd be a perfect option QB to switch with a kid who can pass. I'd switch them up all the time to confuse people.

They started that one senior kid the first couple weeks then he bootscooted out and they had to start the Beaver kid. He's not bad but I like Godbey better. Beaver would help them more on defense.

It's apples and oranges, just tried to be fair to Elkin and give them a pick.

DB's I'll pass this one.. hard to chose any here due to limited stats. Defense isn't as sexy as offense for stats.

I'll be back tomorrow for OL though.

I understand slasher...I just don't understand how quite a few people have said watch out for Elkin....I mean my Alleghany Trojans beat them 40 to 0 at the end of last year at their place....I mean I don't remember them getting a first down. Dont see how they can just all of a sudden be this great sleeper team.

I'll explore my thoughts further on that in my preview here before too long but more or less it's that Junior class they have. They were pretty good on JV and beat everyone solid many expect that to happen.. however it's not that easy when it reaches the big time.

In their defense by the time they played yall they were really banged up and their best athlete left them. They were a different group than they were in the summer time. Alleghany was clicking at the right time too.

That's fair. No denying he benefited off being able to being plugged into that offense.. put any of the areas big time QB's and they would too. But all those yards ain't no joke and he worked to get there. I'm just curious to see when he has to QB if they ever get in a rebuilding year. He carried MA's JV's in 2017 by himself so I think he'd be alright.

And I don't bet.. yall are gonna get your yards anyways. Besides I'm a prude who's lived in MA his entire life and has never ate a pork chop sandwich lol. Weird I know..

Maxpreps says Allegheny jvs beat them 29 to 15. Unless there wrong then Elkin didn't "beat everyone solid" also Elkins jvs were 2 and 8 are you sure these rising juniors are good?

I was talking about their JV team in 2017 KW... They were undefeated that year. Only Ashe played them hard in MVAC play that season. Most of those kids got moved up last year and their JV's were awful.

Don't trust Max Preps for JV scores off the bat.. some moron goes on there and reports wrong scores every week and they can't seem to boot him, it's a disgrace. I can correct my team's scores when we play MVAC teams but sadly I can't everyone elses.

Defensive back or receivers Parsons West Stokes. Had 9 or 10 interceptions last year and caught several bombs against East Surry last year. Good hands
