For the tennis players, this can be a slow time of the year. At my club, we hold a men's night once a week. Its a round robin format, we all pitch in $5 per player. We take the top 8 players by games and hold a playoff, top players get half the cash.
This past Monday night, I got there early and hung out for about 20 mns. We had a non member show up (which is cool, more $$). This guy is Mr. Local Tennis. He is probably in his early 60's, maybe late 50's. This guy does more for local tennis than anybody I know. He typically organizes several teams each season, captains them all, and keeps many players going. I know what you are thinking, how can he captain more than one team at a time? He just makes sure the rosters are set each and every week. His teams almost always go to state.
Having said that, he and I were shooting the breeze. We talked about tennis, my weight loss, and general stuff. He was my first partner for the first match of the night. I ended up playing out of my mind, didn't lose a match all night and made some money. 4 guys decided to stay and play a little longer, he was one of them.
Right after I left, he collapsed on the court. Dropped his racket, fell straight back and cracked his head open. He was not breathing, turned blue and the whole routine. Our pro and the remaining players performed CPR until the EMS unit got there. Accounts are it took between 10 and 20 minutes depending on who you ask. He was out all Monday night. Finally came around Tuesday and had open heart surgury. Last I heard, he was still will us.
Take a moment and make sure you know CPR. It may just save a life one day. Things have changed if you took it a long time ago so go get refreshed.
