Did the cowbell rules officially apply to the bowl game? The rule is only for SEC games I thought.

But since bowl games are essentially exhibition games that have nothing to do with the NCAA, I really don't know.

Good win but I do wonder where all the QBs are. The bells should be done away with. Make noise with your own lungs like everyone else. Thats all.

"Once the invitation was extended, MSU officials and the Music City bowl committee negotiated a policy that will follow the artificial noisemaker rule the Southeastern Conference adopted last year and renewed for the 2011 season. Under that policy, fans will allowed to ring the cowbell during pregame, halftime, between quarters, timeouts, after scoring plays, and during possession changes.

Stricklin used his Twitter account, @stricklinmsu, to remind fans what is the proper procedure with the symbol."

It's the night of Dec. 30th & Stricklin & the Music City Bowl thinks MSU fans are going to follow SEC cowbell rules.

If you are that naive, then just tell MSU fans to leave the cowbells home.

If you're lungs are making noise, I would highly suggest seeing a physician.

..provided WF's sour grapes are strong enough to go that route.

But like I said, it's New Year's Eve eve & you if expect 60K people to act like they are in church right before New Year's Eve, then you need to leave the house more often.

WF coach Grobe was complaing to the refs during an entire TV timeout in the 4th quarter. He was pointing to our endzone and then to his endzone. I guess he was saying his 10 fans in that area weren't as loud as our fans.

games. The SEC can impose fines but, again, the refs can't flag it. The Music City Bowl allowed us to bring the bells. Our AD asked us to abide by the SEC policy. We didn't and it ain't a damn thing anybody can do about it. Future bowl venues can "ban" artificial noisemakers but bowls won't because they want to keep fans happy.

didn't know what a fair catch signal and holding were. Expecting them to grasp the concept of "artificial noise" is pretty ambitious.

that under the SEC rule the cowbells are treated as a special case of institutionally controlled noise, similar to the way the band must be managed by the institution. A few years ago (prior to The Compromise), the SEC voted to extend conference rules to non-conference games. Two things aren't clear, though:

1) How can the institution manage noise at a road game? It's not like we have the equivalent of a drum major for cowbells.
2) Does the extension apply to bowl games?

If the game is not at our institution, it's impossible for it to be under our control. If the bowl officials agree to allow cowbells into the stadium, they take on responsibility of controlling them. We all know they can't do that very effectively, and so does the opposing team going into the bowl.

No matter what, to have that be the dominant topic of conversation in many players' last ever football game doesn't seem right. In my opinion that sucks.

And that they wanted to see how loud the Georgia Dome would get with cowbells.

If they want to host us, then they need to welcome cowbells with open arms. Screw the "negotiation".

An SEC crew would have called it a fair catch, possibly given him a flag for an illegal signal, then had Steve Shaw send a statement saying the officials were right and they would NEVER inadvertently blow their whistle while fining us for ever questioning their perfection. At least this crew owned up to their mistake.

...from the Cowbell being shelved. If fans insist on ringing at the "wrong" time we will continue to get negative press and pressure will be put on the bowls to dictate a ban. I love the Cowbell but sometime I even want to ***** slap people who just ring it to be ringing it.

I thought everyone followed the rules sans the last 2 minutes of the Ole Miss game.

I think the Bowl Game - people took the attitude of if we aren't going to get fined - then we will ring them whenever.

It's not an NCAA rule so it doesn't matter what Jim Grobe or any other slapdick at the NCAA or Music City Bowl thinks about it. Unless we are playing an SEC game the rule is that there is no rule.

What if, over the next few years, we barely beat some elite teams in bowl games and their coaches get all huffy about the cowbells? What stops the NCAA from considering a complete ban? If the right teams are pissed, who knows...

WF held all night. Refs never pulled a flag on that if I am not mistaken. Officiating was bloody awful, and the announcers hated State for some reason.

For that to happen, you've got to be talking about beating elite teams in an elite bowl (BCS bowl). I'd give up my cowbells for that.<div>
</div><div>But for these small / medium bowls --- no one is going to care because we always bring the most fans. What bowl is going to piss off our fan base by not allowing cowbells? That's like telling Kentucky fans they can't wear blue to the SEC basketball championship.</div>

..I link an article that makes it very clear that the Music City Bowl & Stricklin agreed to approach the cowbells via normal SEC rules, & you post "Unless we are playing an SEC game the rule is that there is no rule."

But since sports messageboards are places where one can come to create his own reality, I'll give you a pass.

Look, the Music City folks aren't crying, we brought like 40k fans to a minor bowl. They were too busy counting cash to sit around whining about the cowbells. The ESPN guys were full of ****, there is no offical rule about the cowbells. Strickland made a handshake deal with the bowl folks that no one really cared about, least of all the Music City Bowl. Why the +#%# are we still debating this?

The Mississippi State University lived under the "Jim Cowbell Laws" from 1974-2010. Hopefully, the SEC has evolved enough in their thinking to get beyond the Jim Cowbell Laws.

It's a rule at SEC stadiums. That's it. The Music City Bowl chose to allow them, and asked that we follow the conference rules.
We were dicks, and didn't do it. Very much a missed opportunity for good press, but apparently our fanbase (including both of my brothers) could care less.
Hopefully Stricklin calls out our fans.

I can't believe that WF or their fans would complain about cowbells when their band routinely played while State was at the line trying to run the offense, including at least a couple times when the play clock was under 15 seconds.
