Ran into Coach Sherrill before the game yesterday and spoke for a minute.....

As bad as he tanked the last three years, he will always be one of my favorite coaches. He was a player's coach and a hard-nosed SOB. I still remember his show after beating UM when he said that Mississippi State fans could get out their coffee cups and feel good in the morning again. Not many coaches will hang around a program they were fired from (other than Rocky) without having played there.

Damn, a lot of us still like the man....

Jackie taught us to expect to win. He made us believe we really could compete in this conference. If it weren't for Jackie, we wouldn't have Stricklin and Mullen. If for no other reason, I'll always be a fan of The Kang.

under Jackie. '98-'00 is still the best three year stretch most of us can remember at MSU.I'll always be grateful to Jackie Sherrill.

How it ended was a perfect storm for program destruction. ZenaReb and TSUN boosters landed a lethal blow. Jucos that didn't pan out. A RIDICULOUS prolonged NCAA investigation over trival matters that was a bigger blow to recruiting than any probation could have been. And I understand Jackie had some sad family things (death?) that diverted his energy. Perfect storm.. Can't blame him for any of that.

Jackie changed the landscape here. He showed us that we can win and raised our belief level and our expectations. No way we'd be where we are without him.

Thanks Jackie!

We did compete in this conference with Jackie. What did we run off at one time, an 18 game home winning streak? I doubt we ever see that again. The SEC got better and time caught up with JWS, but he got to go out on his own terms. Mainly because our gutless in the black AD didn't know how to do his freaking job, but I'm glad JWS wasn't ousted in an embarrassing way and was able to stay connected with MSU.

That initial run in 91 and 92 was amazing to be a part of, it went downhill a bit in the middle. I'll never forget the call in show after the La Tech loss in which a caller asked JWS if he would consider resigning. But he picked it back up and made another great run.

I don't think Mullen will quite reach the high that JWS did mainly because the SEC is much better, but he's bringing stability back to the program. Hopefully the coaching retention and recruiting picks up.

was parking with his fam in Lot A at LP.
Rang our bells, said hey coach, and waved.

He looked kinda pissed as he returned a cursory wave.
Perhaps it was a normal reaction, after fighting traffic.

Or perhaps we don't have the creds of Big Sheep.
Actually, my bud may.

<font size="4">...the so-called "Flagships". At Pitt, he had the audacity of actually beating the hypocritical childmolesters at State Penn. At Texas A&M, he rolled off a 5-year win streak against the tea-sippin' Marxists from Austin.

Finally, at The Mississippi State University, he exposedUMississippi for what they really are-a low-end Division 1-A school lucky to still even be in the SEC. He changed the MSU mindset to make it like the rest of the SEC- that beating Mississippi should be the norm, not the exception. Even with ZenaReb bedding NCAA Investigators (errr,</font> <font size="1">"allegedly" </font><font size="4">), having a once-in-a-lifetime</font><font size="3"><font size="4"> Quarterback attendtheir school, and Mississippi boosters spending hundreds of thousands, if not millions,of dollars digging up dirt on OUR PROGRAM (instead of putting that money into building a legitimate BCS-level program), The Mississippi State University dominates the Egg Bowl series since Coach Sherrill was hired.

Corch Dan Mullen is building on the foundation of what Corch Jackie Sherrill started.</font> </font>

Coach Sherrill came to *band camp* the year he took over - August 1991. He visited with the band, told us things were looking up, and promised us a bowl game. We went to the Liberty Bowl that fall. I always respected that he took the time to come over and talk with the band - he really did bring a new energy to State regarding crowd spirit, attitude, expectations, etc. Loved seeing him on the sidelines at the Egg Bowl!

at halftime. I interrupted the conversation he was having with a couple of people to shake his hand and say "Hello Jackie". He didn't look annoyed in the slightest, and graciously returned my handshake, not knowing me from Adam's housecat. I've seen him numerous times in our own club level (he sits near me) so he may recognize me as someone he's seen in the past.<div>
</div><div>It speaks volumes that our ex-coach still supports the team. I'm glad we had him. I didn't see Croom at the game ....</div>

up the ladder in the process. He truly had a hell of a career. Some will always question his methods but few can question his results. In the endall of those schools knew what it would take to get where they wanted to go and paid Jackie to get them there. He did his job well.

And it was as tongue-in-cheek comment. But I seriously doubt that he has any loyalty to MSU, and certainly not to the extent that Jackie has.

that he still has his house in Starkville and plans on coming back when we retires. My parents live in Starkvegas and that's the word on the street. I think he has a very favorable view of MSU.

I caught him as he was leaving the Veranda that night he was inducted into the MSU sports hall of fame. I told him I wanted to ask him a couple of questions. I asked him how many times he got the number correct when hewould predict our season wins and seal it in an envelope. He grinned and said "Believe it not, I got it right a helluva lot. If I did miss it, I usually only missed by one. Now I'm not going to stand here and tell you that I got every game right though. Sometimes we'd lose one I had us picked to win but when that would happen, we'd usually win one I picked us to lose." I then asked him with aTm coming into the SEC would he be on our side when we were here and then for aTm when we played there. Before he could answer, Peggy yelled out "Hell no! We're dawgs!" he just laughed, made a fist and pointed his thumb at her andsaid "Yeah, we're dawgs all the way."

"Can't blame him for any of that"? i don't get how that can be said. Anyway, the 10 win season and the good times were very good, so I'm glad we had him here. But I don't like to see people make things up to try and change history It is what it is. We can handle it.

And I think that retiring in Starkville and becoming a fan of the team that fired you, speaks louder than any of his other attributes.

on his history at Pittsburg, Texas A &M, and MSU had a target on his back and eventually when enough people are motivated to want you to fail, they'll insure it.

To what extent the rumors, investigation, and family issues affected his ability to coach, I dont know. I'm eternally grateful to the man for any number of reasons. If nothing more than he walked in the door and immediately changed our attitude of expecting to play with the rest of the SEC to expecting to beat them every time we went out.

It was to make sure OM fans understood that the only people who think they are better than us is them. That we could beat bama, auburn, florida. (just not georgia and lsu).

Before he arrived we were a program that played just like it's fans thought. Eternally below average.

If OM fans have a reason to hate him, I can think of no better than the fact he changed our attitudes from the lowest fan to the starting quarterback.

But this thread is paying tribute to Jackie, which I'm fine with. But if you want to assuage him of responsibility for three years that hurt our program and hurt me personally, I have an issue. If Flab will edit that line out of his post, I will be glad to delete my responses. But ******** stinks on any china.

he had known her forever when she spoke to him. He has never met her but that is just the cool cat that he is. Long live the Kang! Jackie's debacle near the end made me give up football for several years, but he is still one of my favorites.

...we got serious probation because Glenn Davis, an assistant coach, told a HS football player, "Good Game" after a game, plus Kevin Fant used a buddy's credit card to secure a new tire (one that he paid back as soon as he could get his mom's), and for Tommy Kelly and Demetric Wright staying at a Ramada Limited during recruiting season (looking back, perhaps we should've let Kelly and Wright get picked up by OM because they weren't worth it).

I believe these are the things they busted State for.

Sherrill around here has grown to mammoth proportions. The fact is that Sherrill presided over TWO probations in Starkville.

everyone to leave the damn coat & ties at the house and dress like it's a football game. I spent three years dressed up at football games only to be covered in beer and sweat by half time. All this to watch a Felker loss with a dry cleaning bill to boot. I will gladly leave that damn tradition to the bears.
