I saw a good article from The Dispatch I wanted to share with everyone. It seems as though the new Head Coach from South Davidson is bringing back some good coaches from the past to get things going in the right direction. I would like to see South Davidson build a good football program. Those kids work very hard year end and year out. I remember from my days playing football at East Davidson that there was one year where the Denton Red Raiders went 6-5 or 6-6 under then coach Howard Hayes. I remember they had a RB name Chris Dobbins and he reminded you of John Riggins when he ran the ball. Any way, I will get off of my stroll down memory lane for now. I hope you guys enjoy the article.

Looking forward to a great opening night game at North Stokes on the 23rd. Usually when these two play it is a good game.

Good article. Mike mentions transfers. Where did they go?

I am not sure. It is hard to say. I think this whole business with kids being able to transfer from one school to another creates more of a headache for coaches than anything. It takes a lot of hard work to build a good program but when you have to deal with the transfer issue it certainly does not help the situation.

Nice moves, they got a long way to go though before they can even consider 3-4 wins in a year but having Shelton back's a coup if they can keep them. I see them at least being more fundamentally sound.

What I'm curious about is the change in the 8 quarter rule for 1A schools, South's HC mentioned it in their preview article. How does it work now?

I don’t know where they transferred to either... but you can just about bet money that it was either to Uwharrie Charter or Graystone Day. They aren’t allowed to transfer to another Davidson Co school, and I’m pretty sure that the school system isn’t allowing out of county transfers without a special circumstance (parent working in the other system, etc)

It is possible that there was an address change and they went elsewhere. I guess that counts as a transfer too.

Yes, neither charter that I mentioned offers football, but the kids who transferred likely weren’t really all that serious about football either.

I heard it was north Stanley.

It could be North Stanly. Not that far from many parts of the South Davidson district.

But Davidson County Board Policy 6.3 states that there are only a few situations where a student would be granted a release to attend an out of county school.

1- Change of domicile... if a family intends to move (with proof of an impending move) after the school year has started
2- Child Care (not a reason after a student has reached 6th grade)
3- Parent Employed by the other school district
4- Behavioral issues (can’t possibly be the case here)
5- If a student lives in the county, but attended the other school in 11th grade, they will allow a kid to stay for their senior year.

This policy came into effect for this coming school year. The good part about it is that it takes the principals out of the equations. All releases are approved by the superintendent or her designee (an admin office employee). Taking out the principals makes it a much more uniform process.

The reason for this policy is obviously money driven. If a student leaves Davidson and goes to school in a surrounding county, the money that the county would have spent on them goes right along with them to other school district... same as what happens when a student chooses to attend a charter school.

Randolph, Forsyth, and several other surrounding counties have had this policy in place for some time. They found that out when the board considered making an exception and allowing kids in the SW Randolph area that might like to attend South and South alone. (To help with the declining population).

Anyway, they found out real quick that Randolph doesn’t release for that.

Long story short... if they went to North Stanly, they likely moved or had a parent that lives across the lake/river. Also, knowing North Stanly, they are likely going to be sitting the bench. I don’t think many South kids can start for North Stanly.

Great policy if enforced. Davidson County needs to make the kids at ED and CD that belong at SD go back. South district is touched by Wheatmore, SW Randolph, Montgomery Central, North Stanley, East Rowan, East Davidson, Central Davidson and Uwharrie Charter.

If you live at the lake and one side of the road is SD and the other is Montgomery Central and your kid plays sports where are you going to send them? Same goes for baseball and softball, SD or East/Central?

This is the year to see if it is truly enforced... but, keep in mind, the kids, however many, that are currently at East and Central will be able to stay at their current school under this policy until graduation.

As far as lines, Davidson County has always tried to draw them where there are tangible barriers. Like creeks and highways, since people can’t really live in the middle of either of those.

But as for roads, yes, if you have to use them, then one side of the road is one, and one side is the other. I can’t think of any road that gives you a choice. Now, if a house straddles a county line, then perhaps they get a choice. In county, no house straddles an attendance line. They are one school or the other.

Upcoming freshmen, 6th graders and kindergarteners must attend the school in which they are districted. I know they are taking a hard stance on this, as I know several people who got the letter last spring telling them that their kids are going to the correct school this year (many of the loudest fussers were attending Central)

This will be hard on the admins in year one, as everyone seems to think they are above the rules... but after its enforced this year, it will calm down and people will suck it up, or move. :)

Have a question about district policies. Can't remember if it was last year or the one before that Davidson County Schools hired Phil Rapp to try to attract students, mostly East Davidson, to attend South. What changed about their philosophy? Is that no longer a priority?

The new rule in 1A is that Juniors can now be 8 quartered. Still only get 10, but now 9, 10, and 11th graders are eligible

I think they tried to make South appealing to the East Davidson southern section... Even offered to run buses up to get kids who might like to go. I don’t think there were any (or many) takers. I’ve heard about some programs that they’ve instituted down there to help keep kids from leaving for charters and/or bringing them back from the charters. People just don’t want to go down there.

In a way, South did this to themselves. They talk about how bad they have it... how much it sucks... who would want to go down there?

I can tell you this though, they get the same treatment as the rest of the county. In some cases, they’ve even gotten more...

I know that Denton can’t help that it is an economically depressed area... and that industry (and thusly people) have moved away... but many of them act like everyone else in the county has it easy. We all know that they do not.

Phil Rapp has retired again, last I heard. I think any discussion of redistricting retired with him.
