South Stokes coach resigns

O well, I was hearing they were going to give East Surry & Mount Airy some competition when they dropped down to 1A. Guess he couldn't hang with the top dawgs in NWC 1A and they went 5-7 and finished 3rd place there 1st year in the NWC 1A & 2-9 there 2nd year. Only slightly better then there WPC 2A. Better luck to where he ends up at. Like I said, I was hoping they would beef up the conference and maybe the new coach will. Hurts the team with him leaving at such a late time of the year. That's a bummer as Holmes is a really cool guy. In contrast to his predecessors he and his staff did a great job with the kids and they were really classy and played hard whenever we 7 on 7'ed them. I kinda had a feeling he would though after last year.. waited a good while though. They had a lot of bad breaks from QB getting hurt to the North Wilkes game to the JV collapse they just couldn't overcome. It's a shame as they could have played Bishop hard for 3rd place and had a potentially good year.
South's got some tricky things they gotta overcome with the next guy. Their numbers aren't great as they are feeling the drop from the bottoming out of the Walnut Cove pee wee team the past few years before they went to AAU. They had to fold their JV's last year which hurt. They started strong then they lost a thriller to Alleghany and it all fell apart. The new guy's gonna have to reign in the kids and get them back out to bring stability. Their middle school team last year had some good size on the line but they weren't many of them and they need some coaching badly but that can come in time. Talent wise they will be very young with mostly 10th graders so whoever gets it's gonna have to be patient. Not a big senior class but last of the WPAC kids so there is still some fight there.
New coach has got to find a way to maximize the talent; to be honest I feel the last 2 teams deserved a different offense. Maybe it's me I loathe the Wing T with a passion. I hope it works out as the NW needs more teams in the hunt.. I'm quite afraid 3rd place is gonna be a battle of anemia this year or a case of which team is the least worse as SS will have a new HC, Bishop has Jones back but will be really young as well as Prep, and then there's North Stokes. It's really hard for me at the moment to pick 3rd place.

Had zero to do with “hanging with the big dawgs”. Coach Holmes had every intention to remain at South Stokes to continue to try and build the program but sometimes doors open that you aren’t looking for. Good luck to him and his family as they look for a fresh start in Colorado.

If i was them, I’d go with a young guy . They don’t need a guy to be there for 3-4 years and leave. Find someone who will stay for 15-20 years and build a program from the ground up .
If they go with someone who will only be there a few years because of his age, then they are doing a dis-service to the football program. Go with someone who has a vision and wants to be there long term, not saying he will be, but wants to be.
Agree 100% . Go find a Coordinator who is itching to become a head guy. Give him what he needs and let him go.
A young guy's always a risk.. but South succeeded 9 years ago going with that when they hired Frasier. South for 20 years had been mired in a malaise dating back to the 4A days and he helped end it. He did a solid job there.. hated playing against him but he did a good job none the less. I think that is what South needs honestly.
Stability is key in high school ball.. if you get a coach to last more than a term these days it's a wonderful thing. The administration needs to be behind them too our else you have a Rockingham County style deal from a couple years back. South's getting better.. hope they keep the assistant staff they are the best South's had imo in terms of keeping morale up.
I think a good pick for them to pursue is Jones who's the HC down at Cummings. He played for Lawson in the early 00's at South and was pretty solid at Patrick County and has built Cummings back up. He's a #'s guy.. he built Patrick County back up in just a few years by doing a lot of hard selling to get kids out and did the same at Cummings.. he may want back home considering their future. There's a couple guys at West Stokes who could do it too.

Big difference in east surry football and south stokes football. He has more wins than the 50+ years of south Stokes football.
This all sounds like BS to me, If a coach was hired name him and stop the "He's So Great" LOL hired this late probably means another losing season because all the good players have probably go elsewhere as in West Stokes .
Nobody has transferred. Nothing is official til the board meeting is over. It will be announced tomorrow. Yes, South is behind the 8 ball with this all happening so late but things will be just fine when it’s all said and done.

Great hire for South Stokes. A great coach but greater man takes over and returns where he belongs on the sideline leading a high school team. Good luck Coach Diamont. Know you will do a great job.

This is a grand slam hire for South.. they need a major shot in the arm and boy do they have it. It will take them some time to figure things out but if he can get the staff he wants and kids to buy in they can do alright. Biggest hire South's ever made in the big two sports.

Great hire , deff gonna be a team i follow thru the season. Wasn’t a fan of diamont at east towards the end but the way that situation went down left a sour taste in my mouth. Coach diamont is a class act. So the way I see it diamont can compete early in a very weak conference, will be in east head right away. I think east is the new mountain charter, d1 talant on the volleyball court , no state championship, 4 star recruit and nationally touted player on the girls basketball court, dominating year , NO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, 2 high d1 pitchers and several recruited players on the baseball field , NO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, two highly recruited d1 players and several other recruited players on the football team and NO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP. Maybe the problem lies in the program as a whole as the talent is deff there, hope coach diamont is able to prove a point at south , starting with east Surry
I have heard East Surry has always got a lot of players from the Stokes Co. schools because they are so close. Of course others Surry Co. Schools do the same as does all schools with a winning record year in and year it.
I guess they should just fire the entire athletic department’s coaching staff and start over...
Hope Coach Diamont surprises me but he has never been able to pull off a big game. He always makes bad calls when in a close game in the playoffs. Maby I will be wrong. He just couldn't make the right calls when at Mount Airy and that is why his time was short there but seem to have done better at East Surry. Good luck Coach Diamont !
Coach Diamont can win the big game. I officiated the Mount Airy vs. East Surry game one year at Mount Airy. Mount Airy led 20 to 0 late third quarter. The referee and I discussed how East Surry had to throw the ball to get back in the game. Instead Coach Diamont goes to old school power I and comes back to beat Mount Airy 28 to 23 scoring the winning touchdown with less than 30 seconds left to win the conference championship. Yes he can win the big game.
Class act, proven winner... He will do well. Another name mentioned on here (TH) that was a finalist is going to be one great head man. I hope he finds the right fit soon, as well. It is hard not getting this job, but finishing next to a HOF coach shows you are worthy of the job.
