Sturgill Simpson - Where have I been?

He's been mentioned on here a few times. Give his cover of "In Bloom" a listen if you haven't yet.
At least a dozen times today.
Happened on a NYT article on him on my phone today and thought I remembered reading his name on here a few times so I gave it a shot. That's why I posted here.
I almost quit listening about 40 seconds in but stuck it out. Glad I did. I've only listened to 3 or 4 songs but have listened to In Bloom a ton today.
I love this dude's voice.

Ok huge nirvana fan back in the day and old habits die hard so I took the bait
Maybe it's just me but I tried to reconcile In bloom nirvana style, feeling like I want to break **** to this trippy *** ate a bag of shrooms instrumental underneath a twangy singing how it is cash/haggard outcross of a voice and left aghast at the awesomeness.

His show at the Cains last spring was outstanding. Hope to see him roll through again with this new record out.
Been lots of discussion on him here. I will say that the musical chops of the NSB is one of the best things about this site.

I've seen him twice and he's even better live. He has some Lithuanian or Estonian (?) guitarist that's really good, too.
OK so I'm 45 minutes into my Sturgill Simpson experiment. First thought was Randy Travis. Then Waylon. Songs Yoakam-ish?

I think his voice sounds an AWFUL lot like Waylon Jennings. I also agree that some of the songs run toward a Yoakam like vein.
It is definitely mine. He wrote it for his newborn son so it hits pretty close to home if you have kids (not that you can't enjoy the hell out of it regardless).
Yeah, I was thinking today that I don't even know how to describe him. I agree with Glove that he sounds damn near identical to Waylon. I definitely see some Yoakam. I don't think his last two albums sound nearly as country as his first. To me he almost sounds like if Nirvana was a country band fronted by Waylon who grew in coal mining country. That probably is way off though.
Can't wait to see him live in a couple of weeks.

I actually think you're dead on with respect to SS. His first album is much more "traditional" country. The last two have been much more unique. I like them all...I need to listen to the new album a few more times before I decide how much I like it in relation to the other two.
The funny thing is he said he has never listened to much Waylon. He was on Colbert last night.
He needs to put out an album of 90's grunge covers. Waylon is my hands down favorite old school country singer so Sturgill's voice his the mark for me.

Hayes has really hurt his voice, with his hard living. It shows a lot on this album, which is very sparse, compared to previous. That being said, I'm really loving the album. It's where he is right now and is achingly honest. Few can turn phrases like that guy.
He seems truly happy now that Alison Moorer is in his life. They've known each other for ages, she actually provided backing vocals on his first two albums.
Really wish he'd recorded this one on this album. Maybe next time.
Agree completely. The album really grows on you. I liked it the first time I listened to it but nothing instantly hooked me. However, the more I listen to it the better it gets. I've basically been listening to nothing but it and Sturgill nonstop.

Sturgill was amazing last night. There were some issues early but I thought after the first couple of songs the acoustics were great (at least were I was standing). It is a brand new venue so they are still working out some kinks but the Criterion is going to be a big addition to OKC.
Dude was really good, best of the 3 shows I've seen of his. Where I stood, sound was not bad at all but my son in-law moved around to different areas and he said in some place, not real good.
Tuesday, I'm seeing Gregg Allman there and it is a reserved seat show so I'm anxious t see how I like the setup compared to this.
I was very impressed with sturgill (as always) and about as disappointed with the Criterion. It is an awful venue -- had to stand around the whole time like a teenager and bad sound. It's just a metal building with a brick skin. Man Sturgill is good, though
