Nazareth double success factor though. will have had won 5a 6a and 7a in the last 5 years. And to think of Racki would have had won in 5 of the 8 classes.I want to especially say Good Luck to Nazareth and IC this coming weekend as they have an opportunity to become the 2nd and 3rd members of the Success Factor State Championship club!
The first member is Montini in 2016.
So for all the complaints about SF and multipliers, private schools are guaranteed to win 3 championships, and are picked to win 4. Seems to me that the private’s haven’t been significantly damaged. Only true fair solution would be to have separate playoffs for public and private, which I would be strongly against.Makes me feel old, but it’s hard to believe that I saw Montini play at Wilmington in the 3A (6 class) playoffs.
Now they are beating 8A finalists.
I know the SF is a hot button topic, but looking at this years playoffs, seems like some competitive balance has been struck. Nobody is running through their respective class with ease. I suppose specific supporters want titles at all costs, but compelling games are a good thing for the casual fan.

A big thing that many public’s miss out on is the traditions and consistency of coaching/ programs that many of the private’s enjoy. That’s why programs like CG, PR, GBW, CM.... etc compete so well vs private’sI agree with you and to not separate the two classes as it adds a lot of fun to the big picture. Publics have been plenty competitive and CG taking down Providence in 2009 for the title after PC took down all of their conference counterparts was top-notch. Unfortunately CG came up a bit short in 2014 against the same team in a very close game...

Agreed.I don’t want to repeat a long post on this that I’ve posted in the past but as I have laid out previously the SF has spread out the private’s giving them a chance to win more not less titles. If Naz was not success factored up either Simeon or Batavia would be playing SCN for 7a and Naz would be in 5a with JCA and Montini while ICCP would be facing a public in 3a and Bishop Mac facing a public in 4a making 4a a non-lock as a private winner. In that scenario this year the only private locks would be 5a and 8a (and that required a big upset of LWE).
I know I will get some blow back on this part of my answer but so be it.... regarding separate playoffs for public/private.... first, I’ve seen people talking about IHSA benefiting by having two separate playoff series income etc.... folks, if the private’s got split off they would form their own organization... they would not be in the IHSA anymore. In Texas the private’s association is TAPPS (TX assoc. of private and parochial schools) and we would have something similar established here. Now to my point.... in a state like Texas the most historic/big name programs are the public’s: Allen, Southlake Carroll, Desoto, etc, etc.... so the public champion is the revered title and all assume the public champs would beat the private champs (and that’s true in TX). (Side note: in TX a private can play in the public league if they opt in and are willing to play in the largest class, 6a.... only two do that, that I know of, Dallas Jesuit prep and Strake Jesuit of Houston)... I’m of the opinion that in Illinois with its tradition of private programs the exact opposite would be true. It would delegitimize the public champions and people would assume they were inferior to the private champions (even if this was not the case on a team by team basis) and there would be more interest in the private playoffs than the public. I don’t think the public champions really want to put their titles in second class citizen status by doing this. In NJ where they are separate many know of Bergen Catholic or Don Bosco but no one knows/cares about the N.J. public’s.
To the private “haters” who either want separation or stronger multiplication or success factoring... there are states (like Iowa just next door) that put NO penalty on private schools... a private with 500 students is in the same class as the public with 500.
At least we wouldve gotten the Naz vs Montini game.Agreed.
Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it.
Very thoughtful and educational post. Glad Montini didn't play NAZ this year as I think they would have won handily. Next year might be a different story as a lot of sophs and juniors are getting major playing time for the Bronco's this year. But then again JJ is a stud QB and I don't know what Naz has coming back.

Glad they didn’t play? Montini went 12-2 and narrowly lost the state championship. That’s including 8-1 regular season in CCL Blue. That all tells me they should have taken that game. Water under the bridge now tho.Glad Montini didn't play NAZ this year as I think they would have won handily. Look out for Gerbasi. Tough soph.
Did you miss the etc...?Funny how you leave LWE, MS from the topic. They both perform very well vs private’s.
Bufkin looked great at Plainfield Central as a soph. Big reason they almost made the playoffs last year.Bufkin had a lot of hype coming into the program but did show much last year
