This board cracks me up. We win a game against South Carolina and a lot of people are suddenly favoring Johnson and saying that he makes our offense so much better and all of this stuff. Then we go to Tuscaloosa and play the number 1 team in the country and suddenly Johnson is crap and we should pull the redshirt off of the third string true freshman because he is going to save our season. Have this reaction if we get the snot beat out of us against Vanderbilt, but it is silly to go to it when we just got beaten by the best team in the country.
Uh. UMM does not equal "this board"

Sheesh taking the red shirt off Hoak may not be something I agree with but I'm not going to call someone stupid because of it.

This seasons ceiling could be higher with Hoak as the QB.. Who knows.

I'd be willing to burn his RS if it meant an extra W or two.

I don't think posters are calling him stupid because of this one statement, its many. Plus the common thread in our QB problems has been the oline so Hoak ain't beating UT or UL, no matter how good he is.

With all due respect, burning a RS to win ONE game is beyond idiotic.

No, it isn't. We have 12 games in a season.

We are allowed 85 scholarship players

1 game is worth more than any one player having another year of eligibility 4 years from now.

When the difference between 5 wins and 6 is as stark as it is in college FB, it makes the choice even more so.

I really think we win 1 more game this year with Johnson at qb. Maybe I'm wrong. I sure hope so. I don't think it would be a bad thing to start getting Hoak ready for next year. Do we really want to start next year with a redshirt Freshman qb with no snaps under his belt?

Johnson and Barker are not leaving, they both will be there next year.

THAT would be the only reason. If it is already decided he would be starting next year.

However.... Not so fast

IF so, as incompetent as the staff may seem, I think the red shirt would've been off right now

We have a shot at postseason...johnson too soft
Gunnar Hoak is a true freshman who has never played in a college football game, but you sound convinced Hoak is the key to a bowl. LOL! Ridiculous. Yes, Steve Johnson played poorly last night. It was his 2nd start in a real college football game, and he was playing against the best pass rush in the country. I like Hoak's upside, but Hoak would have gotten killed in yesterday's game. If you want other people to take you seriously, think before posting this kind of stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I still like Barker as a competent qb. He just seems to be very easy to get hurt. Last year & this year. I'm just looking more to next year. I do know a good fan should worry more about this year, but I have lost all confidence in this offense with our qb position. If Hoak is capable, I would like to see him get snaps now.

Bama QB a true freshman...he didnt play like our Juco QB did
Steve Johnson is the 2nd string quarterback and Hoak is the 3rd string on a 2-3 football team. I read your posts, and you seem to have trouble understanding college football. Hurts was the top dual threat quarterback out of Texas last year. In Texas, Hurts was also a track and field star. He beat out Blake Barnett, who was 1 of the top quarterback prospects in the country the year before. Hurts is playing for the best college football team in the country, behind an offensive line of 4 and 5 stars, with Calvin Ridley and OJ Howard catching his passes. Gunnar Hoak was a fringe top 50 player in Ohio. You don't seem to understand that Steve Johnson never had a chance last night. Alabama has the best pass rush in the country, with a couple of future 1st round draft choices on their defensive line. I like Hoak, but he would have gotten killed in this game. In the long run, Hoak will benefit from a redshirt. Johnson is the better choice right now, but this was only his 2nd start and he is still learning. There are going to be some weeks when Johnson doesn't light the world on fire, and playing Alabama in Tuscaloosa is 1 of them. Big surprise. LOL!

When the difference is 5 to 6 with a few games left maybe.

Scenario:

We have beaten Vandy, Miss State and starting QB goes down early in the Missou game - yes.

or we have beaten Vandy, Miss State, and Missou and lose our QB to UGA.

But if it comes down to having to win vs UGA or UL (including Austin Peay) to go to bowl, no, a true frosh should not have to burn his scholly for that.

That is not what is best for the program and if Hoak turns out to be good and doesnt have a senior year because we pulled his RS to try and beat UL for a 6th win then people need to be fired, including fans who supported the decision.

If Barker doesn't play any more this year then SJ is the man heading into the off season.

It's really hard to dethrone the seasoned guy who just went through the gauntlet with the team and has that chemistry and battle tested experience running the offense.

DB will be a solid back up next year that the coaches could give some situational run. Maybe he could be leader in the club house heading into his final season. Nothing wrong with that. The idea of a 5th year Barker on a team loaded with older experienced guys whether CMS is around or not is an interesting thought.

Staff still needs to hit the trail hard for QB though.
Drew Barker will be your starter. Johnson struggles to much throwing the ball and making reads. Barker had a bad game at Fla. After he got the crap knocked out of him. Johnson is doing ok. The coaches think alot of Barker expect him to play when healthy.

Barker is the better QB.

Barker has yet to prove he is a good big game QB.

He ended his senior season with 6/24 with 124 yards loss to Anderson.

Miss State he went 7/9 against a prevent defense after the game was well in hand.

1/2 vs UGA

5/8 vs Vandy with a bad INT, but also a great drive and TD, thought he should have had more time that game.

Only hit 16/29 vs lowly Charlotte

Looked beyond terrible vs UL 6/22

Came out like gangbusters vs USM, was Dan Marino the first half and disappeared the 2nd.

2/10 and totally lost vs UF

Basically, he has had one good drive vs Vandy and one good half vs USM.

The haters will fall apart but we could have used Towels with Gran this year.

I'm hoping DB doesnt turn out to be unrealized potential like we had with PT, I'm banking on him coming around next season.

Staff needs to continue to recruit depth and develop players able to compete in the SEC. If that occurs, you will see an amazing transformation in our quarterbacks ability to play well.
