Tim Tebow was not a great passing QB. Adequate...but his mechanics were never that good. Yet he was a competitor who knew how to win. He had a good team around him, but there was something about his personality that pushed his teammates to their potential. I'm not saying that Johnson is as good as Tebow, only that it seems he has some x factor that makes him a winner. I know coaching has made a big difference, but since Johnson has been in there, it seems that everyone else has stepped up their game. He has made mistakes...a number of them, yet, he doesn't seem to get rattled, and he exudes that confidence to the rest of the offense. I am liking him a lot, and expect to see him play a really good game this Saturday.

Good post, I think Johnson has earned the respect and confidence from his mates. Like you say he's made some mistakes but he also has made some big plays in crucial circumstances.

Tebow was a great college QB, playing behind a great O-line a Florida the hitch in his throwing motion didn't matter much, and he did break all Florida high school passing records. But the NFL is different. Things happen so much faster than college and Tim could just not adjust to it.

Tebow: 2× BCS national champion (2006, 2008) 2× SEC champion (2006, 2008) William V. Campbell Trophy (2009) 2× SEC Player of the Year (2008, 2009) Manning Award (2008) Wuerffel Trophy (2008) 2× Maxwell Award (2007, 2008) Heisman Trophy (2007)

Strange comparison imo but I do believe Johnson is giving us his best and doing some things well. Can't dispute his record this far...

You've got to be kidding. One of the frailest QB's compared to one of the toughest. Tebow as a recruit touring the weight room at FLA asked what the bench record was and when told, laid on the bench and broke it. I'm sure Tebow had TO's. I just don't remember any.

Uhhh ..... nice story, but untrue. The bench-press record at UF is at least 600 pounds. DT Dock Luckie set that in the late 1970's. A local TV station aired a clip of him laying on the pavement in a parking lot where, lying under the front bumper, he proceeded to do several reps of lifting a small car off the ground. Luckie went on to become an officer with the UF Police Dept and was the personal security officer for Steve Spurrier while he was at UF.

It wasn't the heaviest weight for Tebow. As I recall it was the number of reps of 225.

Do you remember when #94 UK rang his bell and spent Saturday night in hospital?

Every time I see him on TV, that is the first thing that comes to mind. Florida fans at the game looked to be in total shock. Whoever let Wyndham blow by should have been charged with accessory to an attempted murder. [laughing] I say that jokingly knowing he was fine after the fact.

You are not talking about SJ's physical attributes, but his leadership. Your post definitely has merit and is a good one. He is cool, calm and collected.....and it shows.

At times this year, he was a little to calm and collected. He held the ball for to long and was taking unnecessary hits instead of just running it or throwing it away. He is getting better though.

Exactly. No one would compare their physical atributes. They are very different in that respect. But calmness under fire, determination, and team leadership....and in the end that may be much more important than physical prowess . Those inner qualities seem to inspire everyone to play to their maximum. It creates the belief that "we can beat anyone" and that every setback can be overcome. There is something special about this KIND of QB . I saw it in that final drive against Ms. St. when he calmly and confidently stood there delivered the pass to set up the winning FG. The team believes in him, and that makes them all play harder.

OP, your right, to the extent of calmness, Johnson (a.k.a.Smith) shows Tebow like qualities.

Don't think Tim missed the TE in his Fla and NFL career as Stephen Johnson has in 4 games.
I mean the kid is a leader and we are winning but the kid cannot make the pedestrian throws.
He is going to have to make throws going forward, no way are the teams going allow us run WIldcat and run up and down.

So far there's been no "allow," it's been the third best offensive line in the country manhandling people.

But yeah, he DOES have to start making those short throws. If and when he does, this could be a very special team. Let's hope it happens Saturday against Georgia!

I am not about to say he can't, only that he has struggled to this point. Those passes are harder to throw when you are not making a lot of attempts and establishing rhythm. It sounds like they are doubling down on repetitions with some of these routes. Hopefully he proves more comfortable with them each week now.

Johnson is on the same trajectory with the cats as he did at his juco. His juco team was awful in prior years he comes in struggled a bit first couple games than played exceptionally well the last 7. He is a winner say what you want about him but hes getting better and has not caught his ceiling yet. Another offseason and 15 pounds he could have a big big year next year.
