The people outraged by Stansbury's offensive ineptitude need to get your heads out of your asses
I scream, drop GD's, and facepalm at Stansbury's offense as much as anyone can... but I accept the fact that if we want great players (i.e. a great recruiting coach) we are going to have to make sacrifices in other areas (coaching). If stansbury, who is a great recruiter and solid defensive coach, was ALSO proficient in offense.....then his name would be JOHN CALIPARI and our program would be as historically successful as Kentucky (as to have the means to hire such a coach).
**Disclaimer: I really don't know much about Coach Cal's X&O prowess but he's a great recruiter and due to his success everywhere, I assume he's pretty solid in the coaching area also**
The reality is that with the kind of basketball program we have (mediocre at best), we don't get to have a premier basketball coach. Premier basketball coaches are reserved for premier basketball programs. I think we can have a great X&O's, a great recruiter, or a mediocre mix of both....but we can't have it all.... we just aren't there as a program....we are MSTATE**.... I think the recruiting coach is the correct approach for us because if you don't have good players then who gives a flying-17 how good your inbounds plays are.
For those arguments about us always falling short in tournaments....NEWSFLASH! The stars are going to have to align in basketball more so than any other of the big 3 sports for us to make a big run....Just like the stars aligned in '96. Its funny that the "star alignment" theory is generally accepted by MSU fans in regards to potential football success... but it is apparently unacceptable in the sport (basketball) that it is most needed and relevant...to any team. That's what makes March Madness so great. All we can ask for is to be present for an interstellar alignment. Stansbury has taken us to the NCAA tourney 6 times....all prior MSU coaches combined for 4 (count'em, four) 17ing apprearances...EVAR!
I hate Stanbury's lack of offense so much that I used to day-dream about replacing Stans with a good X&O coach and let him coach Stan's recruits to a few great years which would greatly compensate for the loss of Stansbury's recruiting prowess.... But I then came to the conclusion that with the turnover of players in the college game, that our new coach would have 1 year (maybe 2) to do something special before we had a team full of mediocre recruits, but they would be 17ing rock solid fundamentally**..... and then we'd realize that we were an Ole Miss caliber basketball team.
