Great news, but let's keep it in perspective. The teams we are beating are bad teams. Vandy's offense 112
South Carolina 126
Mississippi St 86

Without Alabama (6) that is an average of 108. And with Alabama it is 83.

How do you think USM would fare if we played them now? We lost two starters at the last minute.

There's improvement and there's still a ton of work to do. We've finally started winning although it has been against bad teams. No reason to get too high or too low on this team. Let's beat Missouri and take another step in the right direction.

This is how I see the D changing from first 3 games to now.

1. We are playing way more 4-3 and the run defense gets way mokre stoops than they did which was an easy time getting 5+ yards on run plays. Moving from Elam to Pringle/Middleton has been an upgrade of sorts.
2. When we get teams into passing downs...Ware and Allen aren't a bad edge pass rushing duo this year. So getting teams to passing downs is the key to getting to Ware/Allen's best skill.
3. Mike Edwards has been on point where he was a mess the first few games. I don't know why...but his play is way better back there.
4. Sure the opponents aren't as dynamic offensively which helps..

Would love to know what it would be without the SMU, Florida, and 1st half of the NMSU games?

I was thinking the same thing, and yes, probably a job for Wildcard.
Why do I have to do all the heavy math around here? [eyeroll]

If we subtract the USM yardage (520 yds), the FL yardage (564 yds) and first half NMSU first half yardage (343 yds) from the 2984 total yards allowed we get 1557 allowed in the last 4 1/2 games or an average of 346 YPG Allowed and that would be good for #18 or #19 nationally. But I think we have to acknowledge that who you are playing has a little something to do with it. The first 3 offenses faced are presently ranked #27, #50 and #46; the last 4 are ranked #118, #12, #127 and #69.

FWIW, the Cats held MSU 36 yds under their 396 YPG offensive average. On that point, SC was held 49 yds under their current per game average and AL 10 yards under. Vandy was right on their average. FWIW, because MSU was not a totally putrid offense (like Vandy and SC) I think that game represents one in which we can clearly say there was defensive improvement.

Whew...I'm worn out and it's past 5:00. I deserve a drink. I think I've got some Bloody Marys left over from Saturday.

Peace

It's called manipulation. Why would someone spend the time and brainwork to develop data when all they have to do is pose a question on a thread knowing you're around to do the dirty work? Lol.

You have to do the heavy work because I know you have an Engineering degree AND you are good at it.

I have an Engineering degree also, but I am lazy.

Thanks, always appreciate your work.
