Was just thinking about how many different QBs UK has had to start over the last 4-5 years. Can't seem to get any kind of consistency from that spot. It's maddening.

*Morgan Newton
*Matt Roark (hey - he made his 1 start count)
*Maxwell Smith
*Jalen Whitlow
*Reese Phillips
*Patrick Towles
*Drew Barker
*Stephen Johnson

You have to be able to compete at the line of scrimmage to have a chance for your QB to be successful. Coming off the Joker fiasco, we just didn't have the horses up front....and Stoops has struggled to get us up to SEC standards as well, although signs of recent progress are encouraging. I hate it that Towles transferred...he was the best of the recent bunch and would have been an improvement over Johnson.

It's maddening considering we had pretty good consistency at QB before then. I don't believe we've had a QB make it through an entire season yet as the starter. I just don't get the inability to properly manage the most important position on the offense. It's one thing I will disagree with Stoops on, I don't care who's feelings it hurts, you bring in as many talented QBs as it takes to have that position be solid regardless of injury.

If Barker is unable to come back healthy I don't know what we're gonna do the next couple of years. Maybe Hoak is the man but who knows at this point.

How many offensive cordiantors have we had for that list? Hard to get consistent play with nothing around you consistent. Not blaming stoops as brown leaving for a head coach so soon was kinda a shocker and he did move from Dawson asap.

OL and turnover @ OC have hurt. These QB's are all capable, but if you can't trust your O line you can't focus downfield or go through progressions. The OL has gotten better as has the DL. Maybe the DL can now more closely match other SEC DL's and keep improving OL as well.

At a school like UK...you can almost see a direction correlation between QB play and wins/losses over a season.

The hardest part is in Newton, Towles and Barker..we've had 3 QBs that were rated as 4* or very high 3* and we've not been able to eak out an above average SEC QB while they've been at UK...it's very frustrating.

Hartline was the last good QB at UK.
So many fans want the big strong arm and body size. Hartline had a weak arm, but was one of, if not
the smartest QB in UK history.

I would hope that the current coaching staff would seek out and recruit the QB whose
strength is between his ears and not in his arm.

Just curious, who was the last fifth year senior QB at UK. QB's almost always need a year before they are able to contribute so we almost always redshirt them. However, if they don't contribute during the fifth year, it a waste of a year of eligibility.

This....

I'm really tired of athleticism always being the only thing considered when evaluating a QB.

Give me a smart QB who can make good decisions any day over some athletic numbskull who can't count to 10.

"he has such great arm strength" "he's a dual threat" "he runs well" "he's 6'5, very tall" blah blah blah....

Couch was Drafted #1 in 99, we all know how good he was but with the lackluster OL he had at Cleveland he looked terrible! All about the big ugly's in the trenches! If the OL can't give the QB (no matter who it is) time to go through progressions, said QB will struggle.....

The thing about our qb situation during the Brooks years was that we a well grounded and built oline. Both qbs were obviously well above average here but the oline we had during those years was awesome.

Let's not give up on barker. Remember where Woodson was a sophomore, yes he had a WAY better coaching staff to develop him, but the fact remains that barker is a sophomore, I think people have given up on him too early, he looked further along than Woodson did as a sophomore, let's just see where he goes too young to quit on though.

Not giving up on Barker but not waiting on him either.

I was so bummed when Mac Jones decommited cause of what your saying OP. I hope he see's Hurt will be starter next few years and will not see field until his sr year maybe red shirt jr year. He comes to UK if Gran can get him to flip back he probably starts from day one. If Im Gran Ill tell him behind closed doors you are the starter between u and me unless you totally crap down your leg during camp etc... I would pull out every trick I could to get him back in signing with Kentucky.

The injuries for Max suck. He would've been a star under Brown and that offense if not for the shoulder problems.

I don't know about about the "star" part, but I agree with you that Max was the best of the bunch, in terms of a combination of accuracy, decision-making, pocket presence and just generally understanding how to QB. But the dude's body was just so brittle and injury prone. Every time he got hit I cringed and wondered if he'd get up.

If we just could've combined Max's brain and passing touch with Towles' body and arm strength, we might've had a helluva QB. But unfortunately guys who have the whole package like that don't go to UK.
