Skubisz earns ACC DPOW

She logged clean sheets playing a half in each of teh last two games with 6 saves total

Wimmer is 5th nationally in goals against average and 8th in save percentage, Skubisz is 19th in GAA and 20th in save %.

The Heels hold at #2 in the Coaches Poll, but now only trail NW by 3 1st place votes: https://nfhca.org/polls/division-i/

Quite a game going on in W-S, overtime about to start, 1-1 after regulation.

UNC is still on a yellow card to Mendez that then allowed the late Wake goal with 1 minute left. Clearly an unnecessary foul by her, but I thought it was green at most. (unless there were some warnings I did not see).

WF goalie has 11 saves, and a couple of them were wow moments. She is always in position it seems. Our only goal came after an APC rebound loose ball (Perrin) with about 5 min left.

Wake woman advantage really showing in the 6 v 7 OT.

Wake gets a questionable PC call in their favor, And Wimmer makes a great save with only 3 on 4.

Bruder fails to get a shot on frame in a wide open fast break.

The Mendez penalty finally clears and UNC is playing OT fully staffed with Wimmer, Boerre, Pottebaum, Bruning (she's Back), Hak, R Heck and Bruder

Mendez gets a second BS 10 min yellow card that was elevated to a penalty corner with 8:36 left in OT2. it looked completely clean tackle to me; no foul at all. The Wake player did her part, flopping with a flourish. . but here we are finishing the entire game a woman down.

...And WF makes the second APC count (after a 2nd questionable PC call.)

It was clean play. Wake’s goalie was great, their defense was smothering and they didn’t need help from the refs but they got it. We have nothing to be ashamed of here.

I went back and looked at the box score: only a single green card each team (R Heck for us) all game until they popped that first yellow on Mendez late in the 4th. And then a second to her in OT2. That is it, no other cards. The game was generally moderately physical at most and the refs were not all that involved. I don't remember any elevated PCs, even when I though we might see one.

Wake scored 9 seconds after the first yellow on a PC with 1 min left in regulation to tie and 9 seconds after the second yellow on a PC in OT2.

If You Say So Wow GIF by Identity

Cards hurt so much more in OT with the reduced 7v7.

I am in a whining mood, so let me pile on: Wake earned a legit PC earlier in the game and the ref signals advantage and holds the whistle. OK no problem. Wake then takes the open shot and Skubisz blocks it away. Only then does the ref call for a PC, after the shot had been taken and missed. This is not Lacrosse, it should be either/or.

Hats off to Wake, I will concede to the lost. We had some chances to win but we did not capitalize as we usually do. We have to expect that when we go on the road, we are not going to get any calls. They have to put that in their minds when they are on the road. This is a wake up call and hopefully, this will help to motivate them for the rest of the season. We usually jump on teams early and get enough of a lead to take the ref's out of the game. This game was so tight that the calls made by the ref's (home cooking) did impact the outcome of the game. I am confident that Erin, her staff, and players are fully aware of what needs to be done tomorrow. Go Heels!

I've become a field hockey fan the past few years so I am still not as knowledgeable as I would like to be- can someone explain what seemed to really get under the skin of Matson? You could hear her voice on the officials constantly and then got the yellow for the team. From what I have seen of her, she is usually cool and collected so what did I miss?

I think it was built up frustration from Friday night’s questionable yellow cards. Loved her “that was comical” on the last card on Heck today.

Well, someone call today's win as a disaster. I do not think so. You have to understand that some teams are paying NIL money whereas other teams are not. Clemson is doing in with some of there Olympic sports and I know they are not the only ones. Since that is happening, you are starting to see other teams being more competitive now. Also, the ACC is a tough conference in field hockey. Thirdly, the referees are giving the home teams more calls or questionable calls when we are playing them on the road now. This is why EM has been vocal the last two games. If you watched the game today, the girl from BC tackled R. Heck and it took like the referee was hesitate to make the call. Heck could have gotten hurt on that play.

Great interview, Tommy, but as you said, the background noise was distracting; usually don't turn CC on, but I highly recommend for this video (though AI should know it's not "Tar Hill" )
