So, it's time for an upgrade. Think I'll spend between 1-3k.

Needs:
2 suits. 1 conservative but modern, could interview in it but not look stuffy in it at a HH. And 1 similar to the ones Ryan Gosling wears in the movie Crazy Stupid Love.

Shoes to go with suits.

Nice to have:
Black watch.
Couple pair of non-cargo shorts.
"Simple" shirts that go well with jeans.

Open to suggestions. Mainly looking for info on where to find suits described above, what's reasonable to pay for a "nice" suit. Intend to go to a tailor if it's not custom.

For suits, if you're in okc, I'd go to the ambassador shop at western and memorial. I'd wait for a sale, they have great ones, but it's a great place with a staff that really knows how to put together a great look.

Brooks Brothers. Great service. Impeccably trained sales consultants.

If you want a modern, European look, then I suggest Hugo Boss. Suits are usually under $1k but you can find them for much cheaper. I picked up a sweet one recently at Nordstrom's Rack for $400. Skinny lapel, modern/slim-fitting. Very sharp. You can sometimes find them buy 1 get one free at Dilliards for $700-$800, or Saks off 5th. I have their classic two-button black that is around $1k. Got it at the Hugo Boss in Dallas. Guys there will get you a sweet look in your price range. I also used to get invited to 40% private sales...but that may be because my sales guy thought my wife was hot.

I'm not a big Joseph A Bank, Brooks Brothers guy. Many are, though, and I'm not knocking it. It's a different look. I prefer the slim fitting Euro look with flat front pant.

I've been looking around online this weekend and am leaning this direction. Also was referred to J Hilburn as a place that puts together good custom suits. Any experience or knowledge of the Trunk Club?

I've always wanted to try it, but have never pulled the trigger.

I'm in a suit almost daily. I buy almost all my clothes from Nordstrom Rack. I don't give a darn if clothes are from last year's line. I like paying 1/2 price for designer clothing.

I don't wear suits often but I always have had trouble buying off the rack even when getting them tailored afterwards. I have a personal tailor (with Tom James Co) and custom make suits for me (I have only 1 and just ordered a second last week). They are not that much more and you'd be surprised how much better they fit and good they look. My wife will never let me switch back, she's been so impressed. The cheapest ones are $699 go all the way up to $2500. I've just ordered the cheapest and still been very impressed with quality.
They have package deals if you buy a suit and shirt, it's like 10% off or something. And they have more % off for more suits/shirts you buy at once. For $2k you could get 2 custom fit suits and probably 5 shirts and 5 ties. The shirts are custom as well. Even if one arm is 1/4" longer or something, they fit perfectly.
The tailor even comes to your house or office to measure you and brings books of fabrics, etc...and an iPad with 1000's of pics to choose from.

Let me know if you want his number, he's a pretty nice guy. Takes 15-20 min to get all measurements and 15-20 to pick out fabric/cuts/etc. very simple

I'm in OKC, but I think they have offices in most major cities

The Tom James guy in Tulsa is a good guy and very good at what he does.

The cost is up there but so is the quality of the product.

I've used a Tom James guy in Dallas for several years. I did the 2 suit, 2 ties, 4 shirt package a few times, along with just pants and shirts periodically. Been happy with them and you can choose the quality level and little extras on the items. They have been holding up quite well for me.

This thread makes me thankful I wear shorts every day.

If you got it, flaunt it.

I second the post about Allen Edmonds. Their Universitys are money. I'm a fan of Hugo Boss. If you wanna look like a guy with style, check into both

I'm going to wear nice clothes in my next life. Maybe some leather shoes.

Right now, if you want me to answer the front door wearing more than socks and underwear, you'd better call first.

@dtspoke I can't decide if you'd make a better Sonny Gilstrap or Pepper Lewis*, but don't come down out of the Rockies wearing anything but Wranglers.

*A The Cowboy Way reference. A movie I never saw.
