I would think Damp would be at C, and Roberts at PF would be basically unstoppable in the paint. Can you imagine those two in the paint at the same time?

when I really looked at it, I just thought Varnado had a better college career. Definitely tough to leave Dampier off though.

year and to be honest, he was a disappointment for most of the year.....I remember one game where he had 9 points and 10 turnovers.....He averaged about 14 ppg that year but a lot of MSU players have done that......Yes, he went off in the SEC Tourney and played well in the NCAA's....I think a lot of the younger folks will vote for him based on potential and athleticism and folklore stories they've heard from others.......He may have been the most athletic basketball player to ever don the maroon/white but athleticism alone doesn't make you a great player......Darryl Wilson was the MVP of that final four team......

I'll admit I don't know much about the guy, other than having seen his name when scrolling through the media guide. But, MSU's first All-American and STILL 3rd all time in scoring?? I don't care if he played in a segregated league, that's pretty strong right there.

Maybe there's a great reason for leaving him off the list, but I went with:

1. Howell

2. Malone

3. Dampier

4. Ashmore

5. Varnado ---- I thought long and hard on this one, because I wanted to go with Wilson or Bowers, or a couple others.....but I went with the guy who set a national career record.

I think it is pretty safe to say, and the above responses almost all agree, that Bailey, Malone, and 00Darryl are absolutely in. Lots of directions to go with those last 2 spots.

Give me these 5 to tip it off with:
PG - Chucky Evans
SG - Daryl Wilson (hard to leave off Jeff Malone but Super D is my fav)
SF - Bailey Howell
PF - Jarvis Varnado
C - Erick Dampier

Coming off the bench: Derrick Zimmerman (2nd fav of my time), Jeff Malone, Lawrence Roberts, Wiley Peck. Dontae Jones would be the 6th man off the bench to get the jump start on the offensiveend. Yes,I know he only played one season, and truthfully he only played when it came time to play in the SEC Tourney and NCAA. But, if we didn't have Dontae Jones, we wouldn't have that Final 4 banner hanging in the rafters.Daryl Wilson was the heart and soul of that team. Damp was great in the paint. That wasjust a great team but Dontae putus over the top inthe post season.

Now if it is the 5 greatest players of MSU history then Bailey Howell, Jeff Malone, ErickDampier,Daryl Wilson, andJarvis Varnado.

The top 5 left off the list are Derrick Zimmerman, Chucky Evans, Jamont Gordon, Charles Rhodes, and Dee Bost

Total legend in my mind. I was too young to have any actual memories of him, but my dad has always told his memories of Burns dominating and posterizing Shaq (embellishments i'm sure) even though he was giving up about a foot and 100 pounds. Besides my dad's stories, I don't recall him ever being significantly talked about by anyone else.

Anyone have any good stories about him?....or better yet, videos to post?

He had to sit out his freshman year for Prop 48 reasons, but he was legendary in the Tin Gym that year. For the next three years he was a rock solid dependable low post scorer. He didn't try to do too much and rarely shot from beyond the paint. Cam had a lot of good post moves and he could jump out of the gym, so even though he was only about 6-7, he was able to shoot over taller guys. Did he posterize Shaq? Not consistently, but I do remember one instance when we were in Baton Rouge. We had basically owned LSU for a few years, but this night they were taking it to us pretty good with Chris Jackson, Stanley Roberts and Shaq all on the team (along with Vernel Singleton). It was just one of those nights but there was a moment when Cam got the ball on the wing and took about one dribble and two steps and elevated. The force with which he dunked that ball caused the entire Assembly Center to go "Ohhhhhh." I don't remember if Shaq was in the game at that time, but it makes the story better to say he was.

He also had a tremendous alley oop dunk off an inbounds play against Eastern Michigan in the NCAAs. It was basically our last highlight of the day.

And of course, the #1 Cam moment.....was when the 60% free throw shooting Cam went to the FT line with no time left on the clock in 1991, down by two at home to Ole Miss. It was just Cam, the ball and the goal, with 10,000 watching. Somehow he sank both FTs to send it to OT, where we won. He had so much arch on one of them I thought it wasn't even going to get to the rim. Of course, this story is also made better by the fact that we had beaten them at home the year before in FOUR overtimes and the TV cameras caught Ed Murphy telling his team during a timeout seconds earlier "We ain't 17ing with no overtime." When the second FT went in, the cameras caught Ed muttering to himself..."17ing overtime...."

Just how big it was to make the NCAAs in 1991. First appearance in 30 years. Burns was such a force on that team. I'll always be a big Cameron Burns fan......but he's not in the Top 5.

he would be a no brainer...that guy took over some games when we won the SEC in 2004.

But getting ousted in those early rounds put a small damper on his career overall.

In Oxford one night, trailing big at halftime. I was furious. Hartsfield comes out and drops 20 in the second half, and we win. It was awesome. To me Doug was always under appreciated on that team and over time. He was a solid PG but not flashy. More strong than quick. Good shooter, good passer, good handler. Not great at any facet, not a weakness at any facet. But he came just before a pretty good run of PGs at State like Chucky, TJ, Bullard, and Zimmerman, and in that group he got a little overshadowed. I liked Chucky and he could make the jaw dropping play, but he doesn't deserve a mention in the top 20 alltime at State.

The most egregious oversight to me is also one of the most controversial players in MSU history, and that's Jamont. For all the complaining about him not being a point guard, he went out every night and played his hardest and without him we would have had no shot.

I was at that game too. Ole Miss student section was chanting 'overrated' at the half & early in the second half. At the end, we were chanting 'we are rated.'

Utica and I want to say Cameron Burn's team (I can't remember who he played for - East Flora or Bentonia maybe) played for the title game. St. Al used to get beat like 120-30 everytime they played Utica.

At least Bowers got us to the NCAAT. Jeff Malone never even sniffed one. We don't exactly have alot of guards with Tourney success besides Super D.

A nomination. If I'm not mistaken, he set a school record... I think most 3 point baskets made in a career. Never-the-less, He would be in the top 15 in my book. He also played some really good defense. There are certainly those more deserving than him at the position he played, but I think if you are gonna nominate Rhodes, Stewart should get a mention, too.

Chucky Evans
Darryl Wilson
Bailey Howell

Cam - Flora
Doug - Utica
Greg - Forest
Carl Nichols, Chancellor Nichols, Joe Courtney - Jackson
Todd Merritt - Albany, GA

That's a recruiting class right there, especially when you have 30 years of futility to build on.

Followed it up the next year with Tony Watts from Rolling Fork.
