that his wife wanted out of Vegas. The incentive to be a head coach obviously outweighed the negatives of living in Hattiesburg. I can't believe I'm defending Hattiesburg but it is close to the coast and New Orleans.

that was poular to hire in the 1990's. An older, traditional type but a heck of a coach no doubt. In today's college football, it's more popular to hire the Mullen/Hud/Gundy types who come in and energize a fan base and can relate to the players because they are younger. Although, I don't know that there is a correlation between having a successful program and this trend. Sabanand Miles are somewhere in between...</p>

Hattiesburg isnot a badtown at all if you live in the right area. It's one of the few in Mississippi I would live in other than the one I do live in.

and i enjoy it. it's close enough to town but i still live in a rural area. i'm only an hour away from the coast where i can fish or scuba and i'm a little over an hour away from new orleans. as far as mississippi goes, the only other places i would want to live would be brandon/reservoir or somewhere on the coast. tupelo isn't that bad either, but i enjoy my salt water too much.

I like it. It is indeed Johnson. Just got the word. Evidently he wowed in the interview process and is bringing in a great staff. Wanted more money for staff and he got it.

It was all on the walrus. EJ wanted out of that sinking ship. Good for him for landing an HC job. He will put in a good 2 years at USM and then we will see him coach a lower tier SEC team or ACC team...my guess.

for both sides: Is it possible that both were a factor?

I could definately see both. I know if I was the DC of our team in 2007 and our OC got a raise, I would be pissed. Plus, Ellis had been there for four years I believe and I think he knew it was time to go if he was going to go because he probably didn't have too much faith in Croom.

Now, if his wife didn't like Starkville very much, that would have been another good incentive to leave as well. But, I'll be honest- I don't know too many guys that would move simply because his wife didn't like the town all that much.

The idiocy has nothing to do with being right or wrong. Its just the unashamedly biased resentment you have toward our basketball coach that makes you come off as a complete douche. Actually, I would say that I actually agree with you on almost everything else, except MSU (or what other mid major coaches you are positive would be the next Coach K at MSU) basketball

You know that Coach isn't going to back down. Don't give him ammo. The more you post the more it just feeds him.

If I had not given in and walked away from what I thought was a solid career decision by moving to where she wanted to be, there would have never been any peace in the house. Everything worked out.

I mean he is 60!!!! Yes he is a great DC but he is not that full of life and excitement kind of guy the USM needs. To me he would be the successful DC making good money and retiring before too much longer. But hey, I've been wrong before!

just putting down Hattiesburg in general. Now no doubt USM deserves getting dinged and Hattiesburg is a pathetic drive by college town but as far as just living there its among the top places in the state. EJ's wife will find much more shopping available than the Golden Triangle and there are also some really ritzy neighborhoods around where she can live. One of the reasons they do have those neighborhoods is that Hattiesburg was rated awhile back as one of the top 5 cities of its size in the US for medical facilities so there are doctors running around everywhere. Also as mentioned Hattiesburg is convenient to New Orleans, Mobile, Jackson and the MS Gulf Coast (it is the Hub city after all) so its not a bad place to live at all.

Not a bad hire for USM if he gets a good OC.

Whenever we need a new Coach i hope Hudspeth is available... we missed him this season.

If Hattiesburg is that bad of a place to live then by God, there's no where in Mississippi that's worth living in my opinion.

Public education and especially health care is a hell of a lot better in the 'Burg than Starkville.<div>
</div><div>And...EJ had personal reasons to want to go to SC. No, it wasn't just Croom. That's a believable excuse that gets thrown around, even if he told people that himself - that wasn't it.</div><div>
</div><div>I'm a little surprised he's coming back. But I guess HC money talks.</div><div>

Hattiesburg'spublic schools arenot as great as it once was. More parents are sending their children to Presbyterian Christian and Sacred Heart.

Hattiesburg is a nice town.

Why would that not be it if he may have told people that? You know what he really thinks more than he does?

a new HC is concerned. I thought the better hire would have been Anderson. They may have been thinking that Anderson would use that job as a stepping stone to a higher profile higher paying job whereas Ellis will probably see it as a retirement job....hell he's tired. So in the end their female president may have been looking for some stability. She probably sees that program as more or less a pain in the *** and doesn't want to have to fool with it anymore than necessary.

I thought you were implying that Croom didn't have any weight in his decision. Reread and realize that you're not denying that Croom may have played a role but it wasn't the sole reason. My fault.

of your career? At this point I'm sure he doesn't care if they win or lose, he just wants to hang around for 2-3 years and collect the salary and then go back home to retire. Terrible choice by the buzzards in my opinion. I just don't see him being motivated and excited or ready to hit the ground running on the recruiting trail.

Wow. You and 5,000 other people knew why he wanted to leave, it takes more than 5 people to make a mob. You are so full of **** it's amazing.

Ellis Johnson's wife is from Winnsboro, just outside of Columbia. For them to go back to South Carolina was a dream come true. But Ellis always wanted a good head coaching job, and he considers Southern Miss to be a good head coaching job. As to why he left MSU, well, MSU was his only SEC offer when Croom hired him from the Citidel. He wanted to get back into the SEC. When Petrino was hired at Arkansas, he had a chance to go to a program that is considered a step up from MSU, and a coach who was getting a new clock. When Spurrier hired him, he walked into a similar situation - a coach with great security in his home town. Remember, he advised Charlie Harbison, his protege and great friend, to take the MSU DC job and promoted him for it to Croom.
There is no doubt that Ellis was frustrated with the offense at MSU. He was extremely frustrated with the offense at SouthCarolina too. Remember, this is the guy that inin 2004 had to endure horrificbeatdowns due to a total lack of talent on the defense, starting true freshman on defense in multiple positions.
Ellis isa great football coach. He doesn't have a great recruiting reputation.</p>
