ratings boost because his contract is coming up for renewal soon so he blurted something out that might get both sides interested and boost his attention during the strike, or at least thats what I took from it.

The feature stories are usually great. All Gumbel does is sit around like a J Crew model in goofy socks and ask pointless questions at the end of the story while looking he's just gotten done grading papers. He brings nothing to the table on that show.
