My school did at one time but we switched our game from week 4 up to the opener and I'm glad for that. Week 1 bye's are a double negative to me. On one hand you'll get an extra week to prep for the first game and if you have a tough foe it will give you time to scout them. But really there's nothing better than just sending them out there after prepping them all week and seeing what they will do.
I much prefer week 4 or 5 for the bye. You get a month or so in and you can rest and make adjustments/go over the basics again. I played on two different teams who had a week 5 bye (0-4 junior year, 3-1 senior year,) and it's a 100% drastic difference in morale. Plus it will make the kids better off for the conference slate in terms of injuries they don't add up as much with a week off.
