When Stoops won the NC in 2000, it was the end of a long drought

15 seasons was a long, long time to endure between championships. Now here it is 2015. This will be season #15 since the last OU national championship. Just sharing a thought that doesn't escape my mind.

Yeah, but he's been in the mix a couple of more times. Gibbs, Blake, Snelly, not so much. We have the right Head coach..............

That is true. I'm not implying that Stoops is not the man. Not at all. I'm a numbers guy, that's all. Numbers put things in perspective for me. Like this morning when I heard The Beatles "Yesterday" on the radio. 1965. 50 years ago. Hard to believe.

Ha! That's kinda what I was thinking when I read your OP... but it was Yesteryear instead of Yesterday!

I didn't mean to imply that. One thing I do know is 15 years ago teams like Baylor or TCU would have not been mentioned for a possible MNC. Of course, Penn State and Nebraska would have been in the picture. Times change.

My favorite Beatle song is "Yesterday". My favorite Little Jimmy Dickens song is "May the Bird of Paradise Fly up your Nose". About the same period................ JJ

Yes, we've totally eclipsed the 'every 7.5 years average' established between 1950 through 2000. (natty titles)
I too have Bobs back.
I just hope he can put it all together and get eight real soon.

Looking back...on that night when OU beat FSU for the natty, if you told me Bob wouldn't win another natty for the next 15 years I would have bet everything I had that you would be wrong. Hard to believe it's been 15 years.

Especially, if you would have been told that OU would play in three more title games during that span.

First things first.....this team/program must become relevant within its own mediocre conference before it can be relevant as a championship contender. That may take time.

Who would have ever thought we would be taking a back seat to Baylor.

The coaching staff has taking quite a few hits over the years as well. Also ou hasn't had an elite qb since Sam

Don't let him suck you into the fish bait. Jones was a record setting Q-B at OU.

It's awesome that Landry set so many records at OU. But nearly all of his records as I recall, were simply set due to his longevity, and if I remember correctly the guy very rarely missed playing time due to injury. And there is a reason that he stayed long enough to exhaust all of his eligibility....because he was never really elite enough to be a realistic 1st round QB.

Saying Landry Jones wasn't elite, isn't saying he wasn't very good. The guy was a great player, and a great Sooner.

Yeah, and since you friend brought up the pro's. Guess what he's still earning a paycheck with the Steelers going into his third year. He may never make it, but guess what you muskeeters, he's been there and done that.

26 pro teams carry 3 Q-Bs on each team equals 78 total Q-b's in the pro's. Just one that sticks for one year is elite. Stick for three. Well you tell me.....

Sam doesn't have a national championship ring either. It takes more than an elite QB to win a national championship (unless you're Texas... ...with Vince Young).

Furthermore, the last time the Sooners won the NC, we didn't have an elite QB. The national media made fun of Josh H.'s "wounded ducks" constantly.

Yeah...and Garrett Gilbert is still bouncing around the NFL earning an NFL paycheck. Think about that before you use your argument in claiming a QB was elite in college or not. When Landry's rookie 4yr contract is up, do you really think Pittsburgh will be drooling to resign him?

Lol....muskeeters....:D (musketeers) ;)

I completely agree. Josh wasn't an elite QB either, but he was certainly a winner, and will always be a great Sooner. And saying Josh wasn't elite isn't a knock on the guy at all. Just like not considering Landry an elite QB isn't a knock on him either.

Landry was a good college qb not elite. I honestly don't remember if he even made all conference his sr yr?? But back to what I was saying, Oklahoma has went thru several changes on the coaching staff. Will Riley make a difference? I like his philosophy but that remains to be seen. I will say I have very little confidence in Mike stoops at this point

Can't we just accept Landry as a very good college QB and be satisfied? Its very difficult to be considered an elite QB and drafted in the 1st round. Landry simply wasn't at that level and thats okay.

Exactly its perfectly okay but some wish to build him into something he wasn't. He had a rifle for an arm but his mobility and decision making left a lot to be desired

Yep, we all should set the bar so low, according to some yahoos that have no clue and have contributed nothing positive to the world condition.

Oh yeah, with that in mind, I shall get naked and do the hully gully with the 100 per hour hooker I've got here in the solarium.
It's so humid in here it will take the creases out of your neck flap.

Surely you jest.
If that was me in the avatar I wouldn't be here wasting my time.

I probably would be in some US Navy sea port...waiting on the fleet to come in.
That's right, I'd be a big old ho.

Be smarter. Just because someone visits this board several time throughout the day doesn't mean they are here 90% of the time. I check the board and even post while listening to my boring boss in a meeting, taking a whiz, while designing a machine, sitting in traffic, etc. It's all possible with a cool little device called a smart phone. You should investigate the technology. But it may be out of your reach dollar-wise.

Having us all agree that Landry was just a run-of-the-mill QB is as impossible as us all agreeing who the decent posters are on this board. Landry Jones is a record-setting Sooner great, in an elite group of Sooner QB's down through history. He wears a Big XII Championship ring. I won't agree with what you and others here are saying because you only want to degrade his contributions as a Sooner. You were also one of the ones making fun of the 40 that he ran in the NFL combines ON ORANGEBLOODS, so quit acting all innocent. We already know what you, Yankee and GODLUVSBOB think. It's been rehashed a thousand times.

I bet that if Landry Jones was still eligible, he would be the QB on this squad. IMO, he's better than the guys we have today. Maybe one of them will develop into a better QB than what Landry was, but if so, I will be happily surprised. And, I hope someone does, because without a better than average QB (meaning a good college QB), I don't see the team improving much for awhile. Landry doesn't get enough credit for what he accomplished while at OU. He did better than most. If the defense had been top notch, he would have won more games as the starter, because the Sooners scored a lot of points with him under center.

Oklabama makes a great point.....however flawed Landry Jones was or how shaky the three quarterbacks were last year, it's been the defense that has really been this team's primary weakness in recent years, especially in big games.
OU averaged 36 points per game in 2014 in spite of scoring only 14 on Baylor and 6 on Clemson. The defense yielded 26 points per game, but the real killers were the 37 points by TCU, 31 points by KSU, 48 points by Baylor, 38 points by OSU and 40 by Clemson. Sure, there were points on turnovers and a punt return figured in, but there's still no "defense" for OU's porous defense.
My concern now is how OU can continue to score at the rate it has been with all the questions on offense (quarterbacks, offensive line, receiving depth)....plus rebuild a defense that has not been good in a long time. Playing championship caliber defense is no longer part of this team's "DNA".
The team is in a situation which may not allow the offense to carry the defense or the defense to carry the offense early on as this team tries to improve during the season.

Maybe you should try working again and contribute to that world condition. There has to be more to life than sitting in front of the computer all day talking about nothing. To each his own I guess

If you are checking a msg board while taking a whiz, being in a meeting, sitting in traffic, etc., then that is pretty sad. Kinda like people I see at a restaurant that don't even have conversations with each other at the table. They all have their nose in their phone.

Here I am, taking a break from my workday, looking at SoonerScoop on my phone. Gives me the opportunity to coach you a little. Quit being a dick.
