Why did Stoops kick the second field goal?

Because Stephen Johnson had just gotten clobbered on the previous play and I assume Stoops wanted to protect him. He got up a bit wobbly from that hit. It was 4th down and long. Game was out of hand, let the kicker get some work in and make sure our QB survives to see next week.

Same reason we ran the ball up the gut all night. Keep the clock running and shorten the game and make the score not look as bad.

And it worked. Look at all the posters celebrating the D, covering the spread and holding Bama to its lowest score of the season despite still losing by nearly 30. Majority of our fans are very easy to please.

Worked not only on posters here but on every fan call-in show since plus the hosts that do those shows...wool pulled

What exactly is the point of taking the risk of going for the TD when you can't win anyways?

His QB was shaky, game wasn't even close to being on the line and the FG unit could certainly use the practice.

Take the opportunity to get a little bit of a positive reinforcement and live with it.

Man... if we'd only scored that ONE TD, things would have been so much different...

Aside from the fact that if he had gone for a TD and whiffed, he's hanged in effigy by the fans for that same decision, as well.

Again, so many folks have cast their lot against him already, he can do no right no matter what he does.

Why not kick it? 34-6, 34-10.....even 34-14.....

Put points up to show you were there.
I've pretty much dropped out of the Stoops camp (a year ago) but the guys team was waaaaaaaay overmatched and if he had missed on 4th and long it could ruin what little confidence these players have left.

Most experts were picking we would score between 0 and 3 points He wanted to prove them wrong.

I think the better question would be, what's the risk in NOT going for it (besides preserving the moral victory that some of our fans are clutching like Mitch clinging to that bloated paycheck on his way to Whitaker bank)

Good question. Possibly one of the intrepid UK media goons would've asked him post-game for his reasoning. We, the microwave fanbase, deserve to know.

That is the problem people settle for Suckreocrity! That is what Stoops is all about and has over half the fanbase blind whike laughing going to the bank!

Because he's basically an extremely conservative coach by nature. His play calling was designed to try and keep things from getting butt ugly. I've criticized his offensive approach to this game on other threads, but to play devil's advocate", I suppose you could make a case for keeping it respectable so fans/prospective recruits won't jump totally off the bandwagon.

I'd rather see us take some shots and try and compete for points.

One TD would have been as many as WKU as I recall

B-I-N-G-O Additionally, like someone else said, we didn't want an empty trip, so he took the 3 points, which even at that moment, I 100% agreed with. In my opinion, it was absolutely - without question - the right call at that point in the game.

You respect the game and play it like it should be played. The game was decided and you take what the scenario calls for during a normal game. 4-7 inside twenty is a very low probability. You take the three. This allows your special teams/ (and Alabama). A chance to get something in film. And also got another kick coverage chance. Not count confidence in kicker. (Might need that Saturday) Right call.

Even if Johnson wasn't rung it was right call. We did go for it on 4-3 the set of downs before but that was a 45plus yarder. We wasn't going to convert on 4-7 against their defense. (Most starters were still in for them also). Take points and positive of a scoring drive and move on to next week. You didn't want a high pass and juice get blown up and miss next week either.

I'm going to get blasted for this - but this thread shows how ignorant our football fan base is.

Albeit unsuccessful, our offense battled all night against the #1 team in the country.
Sometimes, a coach has to think about the players, and getting points can make them feel a little prouder about their effort, even though the game has long been decided.
It's not about a moral victory, or the spread, its about those 11+ guys that made a few plays and want to see some fruit for their labor.

Not sure if it's ignorance or just another opportunity to bash the football program.

Promise you if we don't kick it and didn't make it. Those same stoops yelling fans would be saying he should have kicked it. If we scored a touchdown and made it, it shouldn't count as a real score because game was decided. Right now he can't say hello correct to some on this board. A simple hi would of been better

If that's the philosophy, no point in even trying to develop a running game at all.

Just put Johnson in the shotgun and tell him to fire at will.

When you have been killed and have 4th and 7 from the 12, it's FCS stuff to take the 3 to try and make the score look better. I mean come on.

I think you are right. Have heard numerous times to hang in there and give yourself a chance to win at the end. Choice of playing on your toes or on your heels.

Might as well kick the field goal. What does it matter? If these teams play 10 times, Alabama wins 10 times. We all know that. Could have been a terrible situation if we hadn't of kicked it and one of our better players gets hurt. We were physically outmatched all over the football field.
