Will Coach Stoops leave

Some on here are predicting, if Coach Stoops is successful at UK, he will leave in a couple of years for a more high powered program. If he wins, we will be that high powered program. I believe the answer is a resounding NO. Why would he? UK fans, and the alumni will pay what it takes to keep a coach if they want him. The fans at UK are just as good as the fans at any other school, if not better. Look, we support our basketball program like no other school, and cities love to get UK for a bowl game. We travel better then anyone, even with a poor team. We are the Northern most school in the SEC, and that is a big selling point for players we are recruiting up North. Coach Stoops realizes that in this day and time, a coach is paid to win, and if he doesn't, he will be criticized and let go. That just goes with the turf. By the same, if a coach just does above average, he will be treated GREAT. Look at how Cal is treated. Also, UK has been more patient with Coach Stoops then a lot of schools have been with their Head Coach. Just ask Coach Strong about patience, and a couple of the ex Louisville coaches. Big salaries have created a lack of patience, even with big buyouts. Let's just relax and enjoy the ride. I and some other "Old Farts" have waited a long time to see this. I TRULY BELIEVE.

Before we start this we have to ask who would he leave us for? Bama, of course. Michigan, probably. Ohio State, also of course. LSU, maybe. The next question are any of those jobs open? Not now that LSU hired someone. And it's still not clear LSU would be enough. The other question you have to ask of those schools which would consider Stoops their #1 candidate? Answer would be none. Probably not even on the top 10 list of those schools.

If Stoops spends the next 5 years winning at the level of Tom Herman then you have a problem. Not a bad problem but a problem. The thing is if Stoops ends up doing that here then why would he take even one of those jobs. I've never bought into the irrational fear that we have to worry about Stoops leaving. The schools we would have to worry about coming after him are schools like Wake Forrest or Northwestern. I think he's in a better spot than that now. We should probably dial down the paranoia about him leaving a bit.

There's always a chance. However, Stoops has built his recruiting success around his ties to Ohio. If he moves South or West, those ties aren't going to pay as many dividends. Likewise, if he goes to Big 10 school, he loses the whole "come play in the SEC in your neighboring state" pitch. In other words, if a traditional powerhouse (Florida, USC, LSU, OSU, etc.) came calling, he'd probably listen very closely. However, if some other mid-tier power 5 team called he'd probably pass (i.e. Pitt, Maryland, UNC, South Carolina, Arkansas, Minnesota, Illinois, Cal, Arizona State, etc.). I'm not even sure if he'd entertain schools like Michigan State, Nebraska, or Virginia Tech. In any case, he probably needs another couple seasons of success before he would begin to merit such offers.

If he begins to build a sustaining winner, his plan will generate a sleeping giant of a fan base. Add causal fans to the current diehards and this place will be rocking. And, MSU will be in trouble. Recruiting the region, Ohio, has allowed him to take steps forward. If his recruiting gets better? Could be special. Not sure the plan is transferable, except to maybe Michigan St. ;)

If CMS leaves to a bigger program then ours is in great shape and it will be easier to get a solid coach to continue the momentum. (Depending on who is doing the hiring)

i would say chances are good he would leave. even as he turned us around, fans wouldn't come back to games and hes been constantly bashed. even while having us playing much better.

By the time he builds the resume for an elite job here, he will have made his own position at UK all but equal, but for the lack of a long standing winning tradition, and will be positioned to reverse that perception. Any of you young guys understand what FSU looked like before Bowden, or VaTech before Beamer? I've said it before, and I'll say it again here... he's an old school "football guy" from a football clan. He played for a legendary coach (Hayden Fry) and I think he is probably more in love with the idea of owning a program, than having a program own him. UK is a golden opportunity to "own" a program without the pressure cooker of annual expectation of Top 10 ranking. If he makes us regular residents of the Top 25, occasional Top 10 visitors, how long could he enjoy being well paid and loved in Lexington? Answer? Until he hangs it up... having written his own chapter in the history of college football.

Stoops ain't going nowhere. He is not a candidate at a Texas or LSU type job, he is not a candidate or done enough for a lower level Oregon job that has tons of money. He would not go to a lateral move such as a Indiana, Duke Vanderbilt, Arizona St or Ariz. type job.
The SEC East is pretty much up for grabs, UF is definitely not 95-2000 team, UT is closer to UK and Vandy than Alabama. UGA is going to be talented but no body knows if he will win. S. Carolina is positioned to make a move but Muschamp is still head coach. Vanderbilt is the one team along with UK next year that is going to be a bear to play.
Think this conference on the East side is up for grabs, I do not believe Fla will be that good, no QB losing a ton of players. UK will beat them next year finally.
UT will not be good at all.

This might be a perfect time for UK and Stoops to make that move, I mean they have the formula with this offense. They just have to get some difference makers on defense and you are looking at team that can make some hay in the East. He wins East than maybe some big program comes after him. A guy that has only beaten one ranked team is not going to be in high demand.

no matter how high powered our program is, we just can't compete with the atmosphere and culture of an ohio state, alabama, michigan, florida, etc. we had 1 sellout all season and that was on a game against UGA to give us a shot to win the SEC East. i know that we have a core group of fans that live and die with every snap... but bigtime football schools have 10x more of those core fans than we do... we might win the SEC East, but we will never be a lateral move vs OSU, Bama, Florida, USC, Michigan, etc.

however, given the stoops' family history, they seem to be loyal guys. Bob has been at Oklahoma forever, presumably passing up multiple offers over the years, and Mark is on record as stating he wants that kind of long term relationship with UK that Bob enjoys with OU. if we had a Tom Hermann type, id be concerned...

Stoops would go to the B10 in a heart beat beat with his OH ties. So OSU, UM, MSU and PSU are for sure and I'd add ND to that region.

He would go to any of Bama, LSU, UF, UGA and maybe UT from the SEC.

I'd assume he would go to both FSU and Miami.......


That's the list. He isn't a west coast guy at all and I doubt he gives a damn about Texas.

frequency? it was one time. his big bro has dealt with worse multiple times a season for as long as he's been there.

"lower level Oregon job". P Knight has pledged $10 mil/yr for the right coach. they've been in nat title game twice in last 6 years. completely over the top facilities. lower than what, bama? maybe.

If he has a lot of success here I can see him going to one of the powerhouse schools. I'm not talking 7-5 successful. More like 9/10 wins consistently successful. Schools like Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, USC, Notre Dame etc are almost always going to have the prestige appeal that UK does not. It will take a long, long time for UK to get to the level of those schools in terms of prestige and it may never happen. Cal had Memphis competing for titles when he was there and he left to come to UK. It's a similar thing. If Stoops leaves to go to another program I'll be happy. It will have meant he's done a tremendous job here.

This..to a point. I could see him leaving for Iowa if that ever came open, considering it's his alma mater. I could also see him leaving for a school like Pitt or PSU, though I think Franklin bought himself a lot more time there by beating OSU and finishing strong. Notre Dame might be intriguing to him as well. Harbaugh will be at Michigan forever so that's out the window. Unless Urban Meyer has another breakdown, he won't be leaving OSU any time soon. I don't think he leaves for any other SEC job.

In the end, I think the Stoops are loyal people and he will stick with us as long as we are winning and contending in the east.

If our program actually is on the verge of reaching the plateau where we can be a serious player in the sec, then hopefully we will have the wherewithal to pony up and bid to keep our coach.

Banana put a real pair of pants on and find a job, at $5mil per year you can stand a little bashing, yikes, my neighbor didn't pick me up when I fell off the swing when I was 4 and I just can't get over it.

Oregon is a next tier job. It is not a final destination job ala Alabama, LSU, GA, FLa, FSU, USC, ND, OH St. Mich Texas or A&M Clemson
IT is a tier down from UT, Aub, Mich St. Penn St. UCLA, Miami,

I would say that they had a golden moment in time and a perfect storm, Oregon produces about 5 players a year. Phil Knight can put whatever he wants but this job is a good job not a great job never was, they had lightning in bottle and there some illegal recruiting that Kelly had.
Good job but not destination job.

I suppose he could but I'm not sure he would. Things were real ugly after the first 2 games. Real ugly. UK stood by him and actually meant it. Not sure Stoops is the kind of guy to forget that.
Now, if he keeps this going and building, why would he leave? He is a head coach in the best conference in the country. He is still close enough to his hometown.
If he gets UK to become a legit SEC contender, he becomes a legend here at UK. Becomes the the coach others will be compared to at UK years down the road.

And, you're only in the moment guy if you want to attack posters for stating their opinion. UO has had some good years, "recently" but that doesn't take them to the upper level. They are a good football school with Nike money but let's not get carried away with what they have basically done for just a few short years. It wasn't all that long ago that they had a worse program than UK. I lived out there for many years and saw what UO fans were experiencing for many years and it wasn't pretty. I happen to agree with the other poster that UO is a next tier program which doesn't make them bad, just not on the elite level with such a short record of higher performance.

If he were t leave for another school, we'll be fine. Not to worry, we got a top notch AD doing the hiring. And I foresee Harbaugh taking another NFL job in a few years. I wish my skins would give him a blank check. He could do wonders with Cousins. Gruden has done decent but Harbaugh is a whole different level of good. Hopefully, Stoops will build off of this year and things will continue to improve.

Stoops is not and should not be going anywhere. He has earned the respect of most UK fans. His work continues and I bet he is busy recruiting tonight. That is job #1 for the next few weeks. That excites me and eases the concern of replacing him

Money and prestige, yes, he would leave, especially if Ohio St ever came calling.
