The Houston Texans made a sad announcement on Sunday, as newly drafted wide receiver John Metchie will now be battling leukemia. After having a breakout season during his final year at Alabama and expecting to play a big role in the NFL, Metchie will step away from football to win his battle against the disease.

People across the college football community have publicly supported Metchie, with Miami offensive coordinator Josh Gattis being the latest. The two were together in Tuscaloosa when Gattis served as the Alabama co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach. He said Metchie is one of the “toughest” guys he knows and will continue to overcome obstacles.

“Prayers from the heart to one of the toughest guys I know,” Gattis said. “Someone that has sacrificed so much with always continue to overcome obstacles ahead! You are Strong!”

According to Metchie’s On3 database profile, Gattis was the wide receiver’s main recruiter. Originally from Canada and then going to high school in Connecticut, the relationship was one of the top reasons Metchie ended up with the Crimson Tide.

Even though he is now working and running the offense at Miami, Gattis still reached out to one of his former players.

Nick Saban pens letter to John Metchie

Gattis was not the only coach who reached out to Metchie. His Alabama head coach, Nick Saban, did as well, penning him a letter via Twitter on Sunday.

Saban talked about how Metchie has been able to overcome challenges constantly throughout his life and will do the same after his diagnosis. He complimented both the city of Houston and their NFL franchise, saying the medical care will help the wide receiver win his battle.

“John has overcome every challenge placed in front of him in his life with toughness and determination, and we are behind him every step of the way in his fight against leukemia,” Saban said. “It’s a blessing he’s in a city known for great medical care and with an organization, in the Houston Texans, who will be with him throughout the journey. Our thoughts and prayers will remain with him throughout the battle.”

Metchie spent three seasons with Saban in Tuscaloosa but truly broke out during the 2021 season. He was behind four future first-round wide receivers and when given the chance this year, Metchie stepped up to the plate and performed. He finished with 1,142 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 96 receptions.
