Jahmyr Gibbs was one of the hottest names to hit this offseason’s transfer portal. The former Georgia Tech running back has since landed in Tuscaloosa to play a key role for this year’s Crimson Tide. What’s the way for Alabama to best utilize their new tool? OC Bill O’Brien explained how his offense would best put Gibbs’ versatility to work this fall.

O’Brien broke down Gibbs’ impact and the rest of the Alabama running back room during the Tide’s Media Day. He says the best way to utilize Gibbs is to blend is wide skill set with the rest of the room.

“Jahmyr, having just arrived here in January learning the system, is a very bright guy. He’s a very talented guy in addition to the other guys that are there. Jase (McClellan), Roy (Williams), Trey Sanders all played important roles last year,” O’Brien said. “The mixture of all those guys at the position is very, very good.”

Gibbs fell just shy of 2,000 yards from scrimmage over his two seasons with the Yellow Jackets. He did so on 232 rushes and 59 catches. The trio of running backs O’Brien listed combined for 998 yards from scrimmage and eight touchdowns in 2021 alone. Between he and RB coach Robert Gillespie, it’s on them to find ways to showcase the talents of all four throughout the season.

“We have to do a good job as a coaching staff,” said O’Brien. “Coach Gillespie does a great job coaching that position. We have to do a great job making sure we’re doing things that suit their skill sets because they’re all a little bit different but, like I said before, that’s a really good thing for our offense.”

Bill O’Brien has an embarrassment of riches to work with in the Alabama offense. Their running back room is no exception to that fact. Gibbs is just the latest addition to a talented room of backs. It is now on the staff to blend them all together to create another exceptional cast in the Tide backfield.
