Fresh off a Heisman Trophy season, Bryce Young is gearing up for what could be his last year at Alabama under Nick Saban. Ahead of the Manning Passing Academy, which Young is attending in Louisiana, he talked about the lessons he’s learned in his two years under the Crimson Tide headman.

Young spent one year behind Mac Jones before rising to stardom as the Alabama starter last season. He became the first Crimson Tide quarterback to win the Heisman, and that says something considering the quarterbacks Saban has coached. But Young said Saban told him to keep things in perspective as he gets ready for his junior season in Tuscaloosa.

“I think he gave me a really good outlook,” Young said. “Something I was thinking as well, but a really good outlook of being able to win an award that prestigious and being happy about it but also knowing that it doesn’t entitle you to anything. Knowing that it’s something that celebrates the past, but it’s not indicative of anything. Making sure that I’m humble, making sure that I have the same approach and even a better approach of what I’m doing day in and day out. That was something he immediately had told me.

“Again, to have someone, he’s been there, he’s obviously had other Heisman winners, so just to have that wisdom, that calmness and presence of mind to even in the moment be able to be happy for me and celebrate but also make sure I’m grounded. Just one of the many things I’ve learned from coach.”

Young also talked about other lessons Saban has passed along — both on and off the field. He said it sometimes takes some time, but there’s plenty to learn about helping the team more than the individual.

“Just his consistency, his view on how to be successful and then obviously with seeing the success he’s had, I mean I’ve learned so much from him,” Bryce Young said. “I can’t even really put into words all the things. Just his mentality, his approach, all the things he does.

“Even when you don’t get it at first, looking back on it now that I’m a little older and able to reflect and see it play on some other guys, him being able to put the team first and doing what’s best for the team, there’s so much that’s rubbed off on me.”
