Much of the quarterback discussion in Tuscaloosa revolves around Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson. Rightfully so, as the two are fighting it out for the starting role. But there are two freshmen sitting behind him who should have the attention of Alabama fans.

Dylan Lonergan and Eli Holstein were both members of the Crimson Tide’s 2023 recruiting class and enrolled early. At the very least, they will occupy the final two quarterback depth chart spots. There is an opportunity to be more than just that though, as Nick Saban is happy with each guy’s development this spring.

“I think that both guys are making progress,” Saban said. “I think Dylan Lonergan has shown a little more poise playing the position. He’s accurate throwing the ball. But Eli has made good progress too. I think he got in a hurry a few times today. Which, he was good to do the right things but he also had a couple of balls that were dropped. That would have helped him.”

Lonergan completed eight of 14 pass attempts for just a total of 79 yards and a touchdown during Saturday’s spring game. However, there were some uncharacteristic drops in there from Alabama receivers. Holstein finished three for six with 61 yards and an interception.

All of those stats came over the course of three drives, which Saban said was the key number. Letting Milroe and Simpson battle for the starting job was priority No. 1 but getting the two true freshman game-like action

“We wanted to get each one of those freshman three series out there,” Saban said. “Dylan kind of moved the team a little better. So, I am pleased with the progress that they’re making and I think they both have bright futures.”

Both Lonergan and Holstein were considered four-star prospects by the On3 Industry Rankings, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies, coming out of high school. Holstein help the edge when it came to ranking, coming in at No. 84 overall, while Lonergan sat just outside the top 150 at No. 160.

Based on A-Day, Alabama did not gain too much clarity on their quarterback position this spring. Somebody could be brought in through the NCAA transfer portal but the job is completely open.

Even so, seeing Lonergan or Holstein compete with Milroe/Simpson would be surprising. For now, Saban is happy to see the freshman duo out there and showcasing the positive steps taken during spring.
