Springfield (Ore.) Thurston three-star tight end Jacob Newell flipped Monday from his previous commitment of Nevada to Arizona State.

Newell is the No. 1098 overall player in the nation, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

“I’d like to start off by saying thank you to Nevada and the coaching staff for everything,” Jacob Newell said. “My dream had always been to play in the Pac-12 and at the highest level I can…I am announcing my commitment to Arizona State University.”

The tight end is the sixth recruit in Arizona State’s recruiting class and second offensive player.

The class has two four star commits in Stafford (Va.) North Stafford running back Tevin White and Sumner (Wa.) High linebacker Tristan Dunn. White is the No. 232 overall prospect and Dunn slots in at No. 445 in the On3 Consensus.

Jacob Newell joins a struggling Sun Devils recruiting class

The Sun Devils are struggling on the recruiting trail due to a current NCAA investigation into potential recruiting violations committed by the staff.

They entered the day with the 86th-best class in the country the after finishing at No. 36 in the On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking last cycle.

On3’s Jeremy Crabtree included Arizona State in his list of most disappointing recruiting classes Monday before Jacob Newell announced his commitment.

“Arizona State hired Herm Edwards four years ago largely because he promised success on the recruiting trail. Edwards assured that success would then turn into wins against Pac-12 Conference rivals,” Crabtree wrote. “Fast forward to early November, and the Sun Devils are being investigated by the NCAA for alleged recruiting violations that already resulted in the suspensions of three assistants. It’s destroyed the 2022 recruiting class, which now includes only five commitments, the fewest in the Pac-12. It’s also the second-lowest rated Power 5 recruiting class, only ahead of the rebuilding Kansas Jayhawks.”
