Arkansas Razorbacks head coach Sam Pittman made a name for himself in coaching circles as an offensive line coach. Arkansas represented his first stint as a head coach and it is now one where his choices are impacted by his time as an offensive line coach.

Sam Pittman, while speaking with Greg McElroy on Always College Football, explained how practices are impacted by his unique coaching philosophy.

“Well, I believe in it. You know, the way you said it makes a lot of sense. I believe in physicality, in big people, and running the football and stopping the run. So, probably,” Sam Pittman admitted being an offensive line coach affects his philosophy.

“But, I think that’s just probably how I was raised.”

He also pointed out that this was similar to how things were always run at Georgia. It becomes a stamp of the culture that a program has. So, based on how Pittman was raised and learned the game, he keeps the game physical.

“But, yeah, they’re pretty physical practices, you know,” Sam Pittman concluded.

Sam Pittman knows Kirby Smart has a crazy practice habit

Recently, Greg McElroy asked Sam Pittman if he ran a similar drill to Kirby Smart, who he coached under at Georgia. In essence, the drill is four offensive linemen against one defensive lineman. In other cases, he’d have six defensive backs go up against one wide receiver.

It’s a move that Sam Pittman doesn’t embrace. However, one he does remember.

“I remember that too and I was (confused), but I didn’t say a word,” Sam Pittman said. “Like, that doesn’t look fair, you know? But no, we pretty much try to keep it fair on both sides of the ball. Same numbers. We try to make it where we can block ’em. We don’t hardly have an extra hat out there whether it be offense or defense.”
