The Bryan Harsin saga at Auburn seems to be taking new turns every week. Another big one came Wednesday when former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron said Harsin has been informed he’ll be fired by year’s end.

However, a conflicting report emerged disputing that statement.

It all started when McCarron appeared on “Slow News Day” from The Ringer and said Auburn told Harsin he’ll be fired after the season, citing sources. However, AL.com’s Nubyjas Wilborn later reported Harsin has not been told anything new about his job status or if he’ll be fired after the 2022 campaign.

Harsin is largely seen as a coach on the hot seat, especially after Auburn athletic director Allen Greene announced his decision to part ways with the university. Over the offseason, Auburn launched an inquiry into the program before ultimately deciding to keep Harsin at the helm for a second season.

McCarron said the Tigers’ loss to Penn State didn’t help Harsin’s case to stay at the helm, but the victory over Mizzou last week might have saved him for the time being.

“The Penn State [game], from what I heard, brought a ton of disappointment,” McCarron said during the interview. “It’s not the fact that they lost because Penn State’s ranked in the top 25. It’s the fact that the way that they lost, it was a bad loss for them. … I heard that Penn State was the main factor and then I’d heard that if they lost to Missouri this past weekend, he was going to be fired on Sunday.

“It’s going to be interesting to see the rest of the year for them. Do they have a bad loss to a team like LSU? The people behind the scenes making the decisions, do they just say, ‘Hey, it’s time to cut our ties and then we’ll start the search now?’ It’s going to be interesting.”
