Hugh Freeze shares results from his latest prostate cancer tests
Hugh Freeze was diagnosed with an early form of prostate cancer a month and a half ago. He has now spoken on the latest regarding his diagnosis coming off some recent testing on the issue.
Freeze answered a question about the results of those tests and how they’d affect his possible treatments during his press conference on Thursday ahead of A-Day. He said it was good news as the cancer was deemed as slow-aggressive.
“Yeah, we got our — the last one back and, thank God, it’s an answered prayer,” Freeze said. “It’s a slow aggressive.”
With that, Freeze has options in how he’d like to move forward per his doctor. It’s not something they have to operate on right now if he doesn’t want to so long as he is handling it well in his mind. That leaves him to decide between either later this summer in June or after this next season in January to handle it.
“In consultation with the, the doctors that we’re dealing with, they think that if, if mentally I can handle, um, waking up at night knowing you have something in you that you don’t want in you? They’re not in a – they don’t feel like I have to be in a hurry to do something,” Freeze said.

“Obviously, I’ve given them, kind of, my schedule. I’m like, the only time that really fits to do something if we, if we go in and do a removal or whatever treatment we do, the best times for me are probably middle of June or middle of January and, because you kind of need three weeks or so. Jill and I, as of today, probably – I think I can handle the mental side of it. Matter of fact, I told, um – doc’ called me the other day and he’s been awesome, Doctor Bugg out of Birmingham. He just doesn’t, he doesn’t think it’s a big difference in June or January, other than can I handle it, the mental side of it? And, I said really, Doc, the only time I think about it is when you call me, so.”
Auburn has a spring period to finish over this weekend. Then, once it does finish, Freeze can better determine their best course of action regarding his health whether in the now or waiting until the start of the next year.
“You know, right now, I would say that’s kind of – I’ve got a couple more calls with, with guys at other highly-respected places, just to see if they think I’m nuts to just survey it until then. But I would say, right now, we’re probably waiting until the new year to, to reevaluate,” Freeze said.
