“We are deeply saddened with the loss of our dear and loving Father and Grandfather, whom we admired for his prodigious work ethic, but who always put his family first. The love, energy, endearing sense of humor, and fun-loving interest Dad exhibited to each of us was truly special, and we cherish the many wonderful memories we were able to experience with him,” the statement said from Randall, who was representing the entire family.

Baylor posted a tweet remembering their former president as well. Being born in 1946, Starr was 76 years old.

Starr played a significant role in conference realignment for the Bears, wanting Baylor to stay in the Big 12 for athletics. He accomplished his goal and since then, the athletic department has flourished, winning many conference titles and even national championships.

Then women’s basketball team won a national championship during the 2012 season. Former quarterback Robert Griffin III won the Heisman Trophy in the same time frame. Overall, it was a successful athletic period for the Bears while Starr was running the school.

Prior to Baylor, Starr served as the Dean of the Pepperdine University School of Law. After leaving Waco, he did not hold any other positions.

Starr is survived by his wife, Alice, whom he married in 1970, and three children.
