Six months after he committed to the Baylor Bears, highly regarded quarterback Zach Pyron of Pinson (Ala.) Valley has opened things back up.

Pyron, who is 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds, announced Sunday night he was backing away from his pledge to Baylor.

“This decision comes after a lot of time spent in prayers and discussions with both my family and people closest to me,” Pyron said. “I have made the decision to decommit from Baylor University.”

Pyron, who led Pinson Valley to the Alabama Class 6A state title as a junior, thanked Bears coach Dave Aranda. He also thanked quarterbacks coach Shawn Bell for recruiting him in the post.

“I am grateful for the time coach Bell and coach Aranda put into building relationships with me and my family,” Pyron said. “The entire staff at Baylor University has been nothing short of amazing to us. I have nothing but the utmost respect for Baylor football.”

Zach Pyron asking for ‘understanding’

Zach Pyron didn’t single out a reason why he was backing away from his commitment to Baylor. He did say his recruitment is “open.”

“I pray that you all will be understanding of this decision and the impact it has on me and my family,” he said.

The decision comes on the same day that Pyron was offered scholarships by Vanderbilt and Arkansas. Pyron was also an unofficial visitor for Alabama’s blowout victory over Miami in Atlanta. Pyron was impressed with Bama quarterback Bryce Young after the game.

Before his commitment, the Elite 11 finalist had scholarship offers from Akron, Arkansas State, Houston, Jacksonville State, Kansas State, Miami of Ohio, Middle Tennessee State, North Texas, Samford and Troy. Auburn is another school that was linked to him but did not offer before his commitment.

In 2020, Pyron threw for 2,314 yards and 23 touchdowns with 11 interceptions. He also had three rushing touchdowns. As a sophomore, Pyron led Fyfe to the Class 2A state championship in Alabama.

With the decommitment, Baylor now drops to the fifth-best recruiting class in the Big 12. The Bears have 19 commitments. But most importantly, Baylor now must hustle with Dec. 15 right around the corner to find a quarterback recruit.
