Los Angeles (Calif.) Cathedral three-star defensive lineman Ashton Sanders has decommitted from California. He announced the news over social media.

Sanders originally committed to the Golden Bears on June 24. He is the No. 677 overall prospect and No. 73 defensive lineman in the 2023 On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

“First and foremost i would like to thank Coach Browning, Coach Wilcox, Coach AT, along with the rest of the staff, and fans for accepting me with open arms,” Sanders wrote in a message entitled “Thank you Cal.” “After a long time of consideration about my future, I will be de-committing from the University of California Berkeley. This has nothing to do with the program at Cal nor my relationship with the coaches. I feel this is what’s best for me right now and will be re-opening my recruitment. sincerely, Champ.”

Sanders has multiple Power Five offers. Some of the schools who have extended offers to the 6-foot-1, 312 pound defensive lineman include Notre Dame, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.

What Sanders’ decommitment means for California’s 2023 class

Following Sanders’ decommitment, California’s 2023 recruiting class now contains eight commitments. Sanders was previously the second-highest-ranked pledge in the group behind Mission Hills (Calif.) St. John Bosco four-star safety R.J. Jones, the No. 320 overall prospect in the On3 Consensus.

Of the Golden Bears’ eight commitments, three of them are defensive lineman. They are La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat three-star defensive lineman Tiumalu Afalava, Las Vegas (Nev.) Arbor View defensive lineman Zurich Ashford and Arcadia (Calif.) Rio Hondo Preparatory School defensive lineman Ryan McCulloch.

The other members of California’s class are Herriman (Utah) Mountain Ridge three-star linebacker Cade Uluave, Salinas (Calif.) three-star wide receiver Nyziah Hunter, Rohnert Park (Calif.) Rancho Cotate three-star cornerback Sailasa Vadrawale and Murfreesboro (Tenn.) Blackman tight end Ben Marshall. The Golden Bears’ group is now No. 66 in the 2023 On3 Consensus Recruiting Rankings and No. 10 in the Pac-12.

Sanders has an On3 NIL Valuation of $5.3K. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
