The Cal football team diverted its flight to Eugene, Oregon, for a medical emergency ahead of a game against Washington on Friday. The emergency is related to a non-student athlete of the travel party, the team reported.

The person exited the plane under their own power and the flight took back off for Seattle at 8:34 p.m. EST. The Golden Bears are set to kick off against the Huskies at 7:30 p.m. EST on Saturday.

California secured its first victory of the season this past week after losing to TCU and Nevada. The Golden Bears defeated Sacramento State by a score of 42-30.

Cal wasn’t perfect in the victory, which was likely still a little too close for comfort against an FCS team. Chase Garbers threw for 288 yards and two touchdowns while Damien Moore added a pair of scores on the ground.

The Huskies are also coming off of their first win of the year, a 52-3 drubbing of Arkansas State. Prior to that they dropped games to Montana and Michigan.

Still, the team is not without talent. Washington was ranked No. 20 in the preseason AP poll and is considered to have one of the better defenses in the Pac-12. Through three games, they rank 15th in FBS in points allowed and 32nd in yards allowed.

Offensively, the Huskies lean on quarterback Dylan Morris. Part of their struggles can be attributed to his inconsistencies. He has just four touchdowns to five interceptions through the first three games. Attacking him early and trying to force errant passes is a must for the Cal defense.

The Golden Bears will look to carry over their success from last week into the Pac-12 opener on the road. Hopefully the medical emergency is able to be resolved quickly and the person can get another flight to rejoin the Cal football team in Seattle.
