Grant Newell, 2022 power forward, signs with Cal

Grant Newell, a 6-foot-8 power forward out of Chicago (Ill.) IMG Academy has signed his NLI to Cal basketball for the class of 2022, he tells On3.

Newell is the Golden Bears’ second commitment of the class. He joins ND Okafor, a big man out of Ireland.

Newell, originally apart of the 2021 class and Whitney Young High School, elected to do a post-graduate year at IMG Academy. He selected Cal over DePaul, Illinois, South Florida, Nevada, amongst others.

“It was the perfect opportunity for me,” Newell said. “After seeing the way they play in practice, I like the way they use their threes and fours. They practically do the same thing, like picking and popping, handling the ball, shooting threes…for me that’s how my game is. I’m very versatile. I think it’s a perfect fit.”
