It’s been Clemson for a while for Atlanta (Ga.) Pace Academy four-star defensive tackle Hevin Brown-Shuler. On Saturday, Brown-Shuler announced his commitment to Clemson to the public.

He becomes the Tigers’ eighth commitment in the class of 2024.

Brown-Shuler has had a unique connection with Clemson since his sophomore year. Brown-Shuler was among the first group in the class of 2024 to receive an offer from the Tigers. He’d camped with the Tigers for multiple years before that offer came. He’s a South Carolina native.

On the football side of things, Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney and defensive line coach Nick Eason have been the spearheads in landing the No. 183 overall prospect in the On3 Industry rankings.

That connection was one of the early winning points for Clemson with Brown-Shuler.

“What won me over was just being around it from my sophomore year and just building the connection with the head coach, my position coach and really every coach on the coaching staff,” Brown-Shuler told On3.

Brown-Shuler felt like he kind of knew where he wanted to be for a while. Brown Shuler wanted to be sure of things.

“I had known where I wanted to go for a little bit,” Brown-Shuler said. “I still had some question marks and I kept my recruitment open just to make sure just to make sure my T’s were crossed off.”

Hevin Brown-Shuler was sold on the last visit

For Brown-Shuler, the last visit he took sealed things for him. He made his way to campus on Jan. 28 for Clemson’s elite junior day retreat.

That day was one that has stuck with Brown-Shuler.

“That last visit I took to the school was memorable for me and my family,” Brown-Shuler said. “I got the feeling of what they were really about. They gave us so much information that they didn’t give me when I was a sophomore or anything like that. That information that I received just made me want to be a part of it. That’s why I’m coming to my decision. I’m ready to move forward.”

Brown-Shuler laid in his bed after that visit thinking.

“I was like man, there’s not really much else that they can sell me on or show me that says I shouldn’t go there,” Brown-Shuler said. “I just took the opportunity to talk to my mom about and she gave me her side of it and she said if this is somewhere you really want to go and you’re sure, then she stood behind my decision.”

The decision was easy after the blessing from his mom.

“The choice wasn’t really difficult at all, to be honest,” Brown-Shuler said.

Close to home

Brown-Shuler’s mother hasn’t missed a game in his career. Keeping that streak going was important to Brown-Shuler. His grandmother lives in South Carolina. Now, she can attend games easily as well.

“The distance is perfect from me, my mom and grandmother,” Brown-Shuler said. “I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t too far away. I knew I wanted to stay close to home. Those are my rocks. My mom has never missed me playing a game. I don’t want that to start now, especially home games. Those are quick little drives. That’s a day trip. I wanted to make sure I was accessible to my grandmother as well. I want her to see me play at the college level. Everything just worked out perfectly with the distance.”
